DESCRIPTION:With the help of West African Jali musicians\, Kewulay Kamara discusses\, performs and screens segments of his documentary about his attempt to recreate an ancient oral epic after the only written copy\, set down by his father in Kuranko using Arabic script\, was destroyed in Sierra Leone’s recent Civil War. It is a medley of oral legend and myth that traces the origin of the Finah clan of warrior poets to a time before the birth of Muhammad. \nPoetic Voices of the Muslim World is presented by Poets House and City Lore\, in partnership with the American Library Association and the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. A Steinway artist\, Dr. Gallo specializes in the repertoire of the Romantic period\, especially Liszt and his contemporaries\, including Schumann\, Henselt\, Brahms\, and Chopin. He is the winner of concerto competitions of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and of the University Symphony in Santa Barbara. Dr. Gallo is the Associate Professor of Piano Performance at Georgia State University.

DESCRIPTION:Donna Gambrell\, longest serving and first African American woman to be appointed director of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund\, will deliver the Founders Lecture\, “Why Race and Place Matter\,” at Georgia State University on Wednesday\, Nov. 4. \nThe lecture\, free and open to the public\, will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Centennial Hall Auditorium (100 Auburn Ave. NE). The talk is hosted by the Honors College and is in memory of Charlotte McClure\, late founder of the Georgia State Honors Program.\nGambrell is an advocate for revitalizing the nation’s most vulnerable\, low-wealth communities. During her tenure from 2007 to 2013\, the CDFI Fund experienced significant growth\, more than doubling funding under its flagship program\, and it strongly supported a CDFI industry responsible for providing affordable capital\, credit and financial services to low-income neighborhoods. He is involved in various musical projects\, including his own\, and is the drummer and percussionist for Grammy award winning artist\, India.Arie. \nEmrah is an enthusiastic music educator and also serves as the Director of the Jazz and World Percussion Ensembles at Agnes Scott College. South African-born trumpeter Darren English is the two-time recipient of the Fine Music Radio (FMR) Award and the 2012 recipient of the SAMRO Overseas Award. \nRecently he has been featured in the US at the Atlanta Jazz Fest with his own quintet\, as well as being the featured young artist at the 2015 Sitka Jazz Festival in Alaska and in Livorno\, Italy with vocalist Michela Lombardi. The celebrated musicians\, who are both alums of Georgia State University\, will fuse both countries’ genres\, performing Turkish and South African influenced and inspired folk songs in celebration of this concert. DESCRIPTION:Join the GACC South for an exquisite Martinsgans holiday dinner featuring Roasted Goose.  \nThe Tradition of St. Martins Day and Martinsgans \nSt. Martins Day is named after St. Martin of Tours\, who was made a saint by the Catholic Church for being a kind man who cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm. According to legend\, Martin was hesitant to become a bishop as an honor of his good deeds\, so he hid in a stable filled with geese to escape from Church officials. Needless to say\, the cackling of the geese quickly gave away his location. \nTraditionally\, this dinner takes place on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year as families all across Germany commemorate the life and legend of St. Martin through serving a roasted Goose feast while children gather in city streets to engage in paper lantern parades and sing songs. \nSt. Martin’s day also marks the beginning of the winter and the 40 days lent before Christmas. \n\n\n\n $85 for GACC South members; $100 for non-members \n*Pricing includes full three course dinner.
