SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Arrigo Boïto’s “Mefistofele“
DESCRIPTION:Join the Goethe-Zentrum for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as we look at Arrigo Boïto’s “Mefistofele.”\nOf all the adaptations of Goethe’s “Faust\,” Boïto’s is the most faithful to the original text. Boïto was a gifted librettist\, but he knew a good thing when he saw it. So rather than re-write the story of “Faust\,” he lifts parts directly from Goethe’s play. And having a great sense of theatre\, he shifts the focus away from that of Faust himself and instead tells the story from Mephistopheles’s perspective. “Mefistofele” sadly remains on the fringes of the repertoire\, but fortunately the title role is so irresistible to great basses that productions aren’t too rare. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required.

SUMMARY:The Whole World is Watching: Foreign Policy and the U.S. Presidential Election
DESCRIPTION:With the entire world waiting for the American people to pick their next chief executive\, the stakes are high. The candidates for President of the United States have presented what seems like contrasting visions for America’s role in the world. Lunch will be served. \nAmbassador Derek Shearer is the Stuart Chevalier Professor of Diplomacy and World Affairs and heads the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs at Occidental College. He served in the Clinton Administration in the Commerce Department and then as Ambassador to Finland. He is the author of several books\, and his articles have appeared in the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and International Herald Tribune. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the University of Georgia School of International & Public Affairs (SPIA) and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta.

SUMMARY:European Science Café: "Goethe and Newton - A scientific discourse on the Theory of Colors"
DESCRIPTION:For the September program of the European-Science Café the Goethe-Zentrum / German Cultural Center Atlanta presents in partnership with the Consulates General of Switzerland\, Great Britain\, Belgium\, Ireland\, and France\, Alliance Française\, and Science Tavern an evening dedicated to “Goethe and Newton – A scientific discourse on the Theory of Colors”. The Geothe-Zentrum invites you to join them and Historian Dr. Kenneth Knoespel\, McEver Professor of Engineering and the Liberal Arts\, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts\, Georgia Institute of Technology for his lecture on this topic followed by a discussion. \nIsaac Newton published Opticks in 1704\, a groundbreaking book on the fundamental nature of light and color. Using a prism he separated white light into its individual components\, united the spectral colors back to white light and discovered the complementary colors. This finding had quite an impact on Goethe who would spend years trying to prove Newton wrong. For an aesthetic as Goethe\, it did not seem possible that light consists of colors. For him white light was indivisible and purely homogeneous. On the contrary\, Goethe believed that colors arise from the battle of darkness and brightness. In 1810 he released “Theory of Colors”\, a book which prompted a storm of criticism. Only the part on human perception of colors received recognition. \nIt’s all taking place at the Goethe-Zentrum on Wednesday September 14 in partnership with the Atlanta Science Tavern. \nJoin them from 5:30 pm for some light refreshments and snacks!

SUMMARY:Otto Neumann: Selections from the Rothschild Collection
DESCRIPTION:Oglethorpe University Museum of Art’s new exhibit opens on September 23 and presents more than 100 drawings\, watercolors\, and prints by German artist Otto Neumann. Neumann\, a Gentile who refused to divorce his Jewish wife\, Hilde Rothschild\, lived with the constant strain of the political climate in Nazi Germany. During this period of oppression\, Neumann drew strength from his love of family\, literature\, and art. Inspired by Gustav Doré’s illustrations\, Neumann illustrated Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy\, creating iterations of sketches and prints of the various cantos. He created interpretive studies of classical mythology and Biblical stories. Much of Neumann’s work speaks of conflict\, duress\, and crises. Introspective self-portraits\, drawings\, and paintings of his wife and daughter are also on view and show a closely bonded family under strain. This exhibition gives a unique window into the life of a reserved man with a revolutionary spirit.
