SUMMARY:3rd Annual Czech That Film festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Czech film festival titled “Czech That Film” has been established in 2012. Currently\, it is the largest Czech cultural event in the United States. It is a film festival of best recent Czech films held throughout the United States every year\, with a range of screenings and discussion with cast and crew. The four-month-long festival keeps growing every year. Its sixth edition will reach 15 major US and Canadian cities (Los Angeles\, San Fracisco\, Salt Lake City\, Austin\, Washington\, Denver\, Dallas\, Atlanta\, New York City\, Little Rock\, Portland\, Minneapolis\, Chicago\, Seattle\, Toronto) in 2017 \nApril 30\, 2019 – Patrimony: Fashion designer Eva unexpectedly becomes a widow. Surprises continue to come when she discovers an unknown child’s drawing in her late husband’s possessions. Even though Eva would like to ignore the discovery\, her daughter Tereza\, whose life is falling apart\, latches onto the idea of an estranged stepbrother. The mother and daughter set out in her late husband’s vintage car to follow the trails of his former lovers\, look for old friends\, and find out more about the hidden family secret. \nMay 1\, 2019 -Golden sting: Young Czechoslovak men learn to play basketball from American Mormons at a YMCA camp in 1938. When World War II erupts a year later\, their coach is arrested and executed. A young lawyer named Franta steps in to manage the team. After the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945\, he visits the prison yard where their coach died\, picking up a handful of soil and placing in a box with national colors. The team carries this talisman to the European Championship in Geneva where the Czechs miraculously win in 1946. However\, everything changes again with the communist coup in February 1948. Friendships are broken\, several basketball players are persecuted\, and Franta is arrested. The team will go to Paris to defend their title\, but can they succeed? \nMay 2. 2019- Suitor: Set in the late 1950s\, the communist regime controls Czechoslovakia\, and a gap has opened between the prewar and postwar generations. City girl Daniela meets country boy Mirek while staying at the garden store run by her aunt and uncle. Love begins to bloom\, but Daniela’s father is furious. He has other plans for his daughter\, intent on making the perfect match with an educated catch. The romantic comedy is the final instalment of director Hřebejk’s Garden Store trilogy\, following three families: an air radio operator\, a hair salon owner\, and a garden store proprietor against the backdrop of the most dramatic periods of the last century.

SUMMARY:Strategic Infrastructure Dialogue: GT Smart Cities Conference
DESCRIPTION:The term ‘smart cities’ was first used in its modern sense in the 1990s. Yet\, as of today\, no city around the globe can claim to have successfully integrated a holistic smart cities approach.  \nOne explanation is that there has been a disconnect between smart cities technologies and the residents of the communities these technologies are supposed to serve.   \nThe Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) will hold a two-day Smart Cities Dialogue on May 7-8\, 2019 to help frame the debate on this paradigm. It will discuss how to develop smarter communities that understand urban life primarily as a social\, and only secondarily as a technical and logistic ecosystem. Topics will capture inclusive engagement\, smaller communities that may not see themselves as part of the “smart cities” effort\, social and socioeconomic mobility as well as connections within economic regions. \nIn addition to bringing together key national and international stakeholders from local governments as well as industry and academic leaders for a series of insightful discussions\, attendees will have the opportunity to experience ‘research in action’ and discover some of Georgia Tech’s latest solutions in this domain.

SUMMARY:ACIR Hosts Joe Bankoff: "Fake News in the World Today."
DESCRIPTION:During the Cold War we were exposed to what was then called “Disinformation.” It was a tool often used by the Soviet Union to seed the political environment abroad with credible but misleading and often false information with a deliberate attempt to deceive. In some ways\, today what we call “Fake News” is similar in some ways and perhaps more pernicious in others. Come and engage in a dialogue with Joe Bankoff on “Fake News” in the World Today.” \nJoe Bankoff was appointed chair of The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs in spring 2012 following six years as president & CEO of The Woodruff Arts Center and 32 years as a senior partner at the Atlanta-based law firm of King & Spalding. \nMr. Bankoff’s expertise ranges across law and policy\, economic development\, government legislation\, fiscal planning\, and global issues. In 1992\, he took a sabbatical from his law firm to accept an appointment as a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property & Competition Law\, Munich\, Germany.  There he became engaged in the analysis of multi-jurisdictional copyright claims arising from satellite television in Europe.  He later represented German Television (ZDF) in a related dispute with Turner Broadcasting.  He also served as counsel to Atlanta’s Olympic Organizing Committee negotiating the television rights agreements for Europe (EBU)\, Canada\, Australia\, Latin and South America\, and the United States.

SUMMARY:Society. The Last Chance.
DESCRIPTION:“THE UNIVERSAL GRAIN. Game of Professionals. Society. The Last Chance” \nJoin together with a hundred thousand plus people from around the world as we discuss the most important questions for society today. This historic event is initiated by people themselves with the goal to raise vital questions that concern topics of peace\, humanness\, and empathy. They will touch on the question as to why we have such world problems as wars\, international conflicts\, racial and religious discrimination\, misinterpretation of information by mass media\, consumer oriented society\, etc. This is a pivotal opportunity on such a significant scale for our human family to look into the eyes of each other and unite\, not only in words\, but in deeds. \n“THE UNIVERSAL GRAIN” is a project aimed towards uniting people on the basis of spiritual values and common grains of knowledge that exist in all religions and cultures. By studying the sacred texts of all existing religions and cultures\, we show that all world teachings are based on the same grains of truth; our cultures and religions speak and teach about the same truths and knowledge. This realization gives people an understanding that we are indeed all United!

SUMMARY:Comedy: Eddie Izzard's Wunderbar U.S. Tour
DESCRIPTION:Eddie Izzard’s Wunderbar – US Tour. Five years after his last comedy tour\, Force Majeure\, made comedy history having played 45 countries including all 50 of the United States AND in four languages\, making it the most extensive comedy show ever\, Eddie is back to his roots with an all-new show which expands on his own very unique\, totally surreal view of life\, love\, history and his ‘theory of the universe.’ Wunderbar is a delicious insight into the surreal and fantastical world of Eddie Izzard. This is intelligent Bunkum of the highest order. Wunderbar began life at La Nouvelle Seine\, a floating theatre in Paris on the Seine where Eddie began to improvise his new show in French. He then flipped countries and continued developing the show improvising in Berlin in German. Now after more development in English\, Eddie is ready to share Wunderbar with the world… But will make sure the language fits the country! SUMMARY:The Empty Throne: America's Abdication of Global Leadership
DESCRIPTION:America emerged from WWII victorious and determined to create and lead a new world order. Through strong security alliances\, free and open markets\, and promoting democracy and human rights globally\, American leadership brought decades of peace and prosperity to the world. \n75 years later\, America has begun to turn its back on global leadership\, focusing on winning rather than leading. Who will step in to fill this vacuum and what does this new world order look like? Daalder & Lindsay’s new book The Empty Throne: America’s Abdication of Global Leadership analyzes the choices confronting the United States as the septuagenarian institutions created in the wake of World War II adjust – or not – to a new reality. \nRobyn Curnow\, CNN Anchor\, will moderate the discussion. Come join for a discussion with Ivo Daalder\, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and President of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs\, and James Lindsay\, Senior Vice-President\, Council on Foreign Relations\, as they examine how the U.S.’ global role is changing and what this means for the world. \nAdmission includes free parking\, appetizers\, and beer/wine.
