SUMMARY:Spruill Center For The Arts Presents Homecoming By Ilona Cutts
DESCRIPTION:Finnish-born artist\, Ilona Cutts exhibits her new series of paintings\, HOMECOMING. Having spent much of her life as a nomad\, moving from country to country\, Cutts has been searching for Home most of her life. She has the eye of a wanderer\, like a plant without roots. It is this rootlessness that has formed her artistic style where a myriad of cultures can be seen in her fantastical figures and dreamlike landscapes. After recently becoming a US Citizen\, Cutts has begun to put down roots and discover the elusive feeling of Home. In her new body of work\, HOMECOMING\, Cutts explores this idea of Home and what it means to her and others. \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, January 20\, 6-9 pm\nARTIST TALK: Saturday\, February 5\, 2 pm \nAbout the Artist\nIlona Cutts \nIlona Cutts (born Sampovaara) studied Fine Arts at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In 1995 she received her BFA in painting from Kankaanpää Art College\, in Finland. Ilona’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group Shows. She has exhibited in Finland\, Mexico\, the USA\, France and Spain. Her work can be found in important collections such as the Oulu Museum of Modern Art in Oulu\, Finland. Her latest group show in Finland was at SINKKA\, Contemporary Art Museum of Kerava in Finland\, and participated in 2 group shows at Stone Sparrow Gallery in New York City in 2020. \nBorn to a diplomatic family\, her family continuously moved from country to country since her birth in 1972. She lived in Argentina\, Poland\, the U.K\, Mexico and Spain. She spent 21yrs in Mexico which deeply impacted her being and the art she makes. \nAs her family was continually moving from country to country as a child\, Ilona often felt alone as she had to say goodbye to her friends. So as not to feel lonely she began drawing at a very early age and found solice in the creatures she painted. \nIlona and her Mother have a very special bond. Her Mother collected Art and antiques and encouraged Ilona to see beauty all around observing nature and animals. Surrounded by art and antiques Ilona had the chance to observe and study art in many forms. Her Mother crossed over to the Other Side in 2016\, their special bond continues. \nIlona’s paintings center on anthropomorphic creatures or girl like figures\, surrounded by nature or objects of obscure symbolic and ethereal meaning. Her narrative storytelling is both cute and cruel\, at times disclosing her own personal views on the delicate relationship between man and spirit nature. \nCurrently Ilona is working on a new body of work for upcoming exhibitions\, she also teaches oil painting and mentors other artists who are interested in pursuing a career in painting. \nIlona moved to the US in 2016. She and her husband John\, their Shar-Pei\, Liisa Lightray and their cat\, Frida Katlo all live in Atlanta in a romantic white house. \nDaily Parking\nThe parking entrance is located on Meadow Lane. Turn right after entering the complex. Marked parking spots are located on the right\, near the gallery’s garden. Spaces on the left are first come first serve. Overflow parking is available on terraced levels below the gallery. \nContact gallery@spruillarts.org with inquiries.

Claire was the operational and thought leader in charge of delivering comprehensive strategy\, content and curated events for cities across the United States suffering from a recognition deficit. \nClaire discovered the truth behind the saying ‘think global\, act local’ in 2013\, when she opened and led the Office of International Affairs for the city of Atlanta. During her four-year tenure\, Claire contributed to $2.7 billion in economic output and to 10\,000+ new jobs\, and raised over $3 million of new funds to support international projects in the city of Atlanta. She also supported international film projects such as Taken 3\, and helped establish key partnerships with international organizations including the World Economic Forum\, the Clinton Foundation and others to support the creation of community-focused programs. In this endeavor\, she rallied the support of many Global Fortune 500 Companies such as The Coca-Cola Company\, Delta Air Lines\, UPS and others. \nPrevious to working for the city of Atlanta\, Claire worked for the Consulate General of France in Atlanta where she was in charge of public and media relations\, communications\, special events\, and political analysis. Claire is a certified global business professional (NASBITE INTERNATIONAL) and is a board member of the Operation Hope Global Forum Annual Meeting\, the French Foreign Trade Advisors – U.S. Southeast and Alliance Française of Atlanta. \nClaire lives in Atlanta with her husband John and her son Louis. \nBrad Taylor\, head of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities\, Radial North America\nBrad Taylor is head of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities for Radial North America\, and has over 20 years of experience in retail supply chain. He and his team lead site selection\, procurement\, and management of real estate assets across all business units as well as provide facilities maintenance support for automation and workplace infrastructure. Prior to Radial\, Brad held leadership positions in fulfillment operations and engineering for Retail and CPG companies such as Nike\, Chico’s FAS\, and Belk Department Stores. After earning his Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Tech\, Brad spent the first decade of his career as a supply chain consultant designing and launching fulfillment facilities for retailers around the globe. \nBrad currently resides in the Athens\, Georgia area with his wife and two children. \nStebin Horne\, Founder\, Classic Overland\nStebin Horne is an inventor\, entrepreneur\, international business owner and conservationist who spends much of his time in Bolingbroke\, Georgia and Cape Town\, South Africa. Born and raised in Macon\, Georgia\, Stebin attended Stratford Academy where he excelled\nin both soccer and track\, setting many school and state records. From there he attended the University of Georgia in Athens where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the School of Public and International Affairs. Stebin returned to Macon to earn his law degree and obtain his Juris Doctor from Walter F. Georgia School of Law. He alsohad the pleasure of obtaining a semester of credit at Oxford University Law School in Oxford\, England. \nEarly in his career Stebin joined his Father’s law practice and focused on business law; primarily real estate and commercial transactions. At just 25 years old he was one of the youngest people to be elected to public office in Macon serving on both the Macon City Council and the Macon Water Authority. When the recession of 2008 hit\, Stebin had the opportunity to become an executive in the Healthcare Industry working for CareSouth where he focused on Mergers and Acquisitions as well as represented them on Capital Hill in Washington DC during the Obamacare Negotiations. \nIt was during this time he met his wife\, Roos-Maryn who is from South Africa. They would soon marry and reside in South Africa which became a transformative period for Stebin. It was there where he began pursuing his passion for the outdoors and nature. Traveling\nthroughout southern Africa\, Stebin was exposed to a new world that would spark his entrepreneurial spirit and forge a commitment to experiential conservation. Since 2015\, Stebin has started 3 businesses with direct ties to South Africa. First\, he invented and patented the KUDU Grill\, an outdoor open fire cooking system that blends the South African tradition of “braai” (pronounced “bry”) with cast iron cooking traditions from America. Second\, he began African Charcoal Company alongside KUDU Grills\, which converts South African invasive tree species to cooking fuel\, protecting the natural habitat and creating jobs for local indigenous people. Lastly\, Stebin founded Classic Overland\, a company based in South Africa\, that restores Land Rover Defenders and sells them in the United States. Classic Overland was recently recognized by the University of Georgia as one of the Top 100 fastest growing businesses by a University of Georgia Alumni. Above and beyond these accomplishments\, Stebin is most proud of his Level 1 Field Guide and Tracking Certification in South Africa. Through his time working with Eco-Training Africa\, Stebin has become a Government Authorized Field Guide qualifying him as an expert on the African bush and its fragile ecosystem. In his spare time\, you will find Stebin\, along with his wife and 3 children exploring remote parts of the African wilderness and bringing people around the world closer to these critically endangered environments. \nHosted by: \n \n\nThe event will be held in the Taylor Hall Amphitheatre of Wesleyan College\, 4760 Forsyth Road. SUMMARY:Reflecting America in the U.S. Foreign Service
DESCRIPTION:The U.S Department of State is struggling to reflect the country it represents. In 2020\, only 57 percent of Americans identified as “white only.” That same year\, a Government Accountability Office report found that women and racial minorities working in the State Department were nearly 30 percent less likely to be promoted than their white counterparts.\n\n“There’s no one way to define diversity\,” said Ambassador (Ret.) Harry K. Thomas Jr. who introduced innovative recruiting programs during his tenure as Director General of the Foreign Service. “Diversity across organizations like the State Department\, USAID and the Peace Corps makes the United States much stronger overseas.”\n\nJoin us on Thursday\, February 10\, 2022\, as we sit down with Ambassador Thomas for a candid conversation on how fostering diversity and inclusion will strengthen the State Department and\, as a result\, U.S. foreign policy at large.

Now\, celebrated actor\, Anthony Skordi\, brings this larger-than-life persona to the stage in his one-man production of Onassis. Aristotle Onassis’ life has been referred to as both a storybook existence\, as well as a Greek tragedy. Skordi has exhaustedly researched the man who entertained everyone from business tycoons and royalty to the icons of stage and screen\, as well as Presidents… and their wives\, to offer a glimpse into the opulent world of the man who made and lived by his own rules as he went along. The billionaire faced scandals\, deaths and what many would call the ‘Onassis Curse.’ \nVeteran Greek-British actor Anthony Skordi will embody the role of Aristotle Onassis. \nAbout Anthony Skordi \nThe talented actor Anthony Skordi was born in London\, England\, to Greek-Cypriot parents. He attended Drama Centre in London\, was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a member of Vanessa Redgrave’s Moving Theatre Company. Best known for his roles as Admiral Garrick Versio in “Star Wars Battlefront II\,” and The Dealer in the “Hand of Fate” series of games\, Skordi has risen to prominence for his voiceover work in a series of video games and in the narration of audiobooks. He has voiced many video games\, promos\, and trailers and has appeared as series regular on several TV series in Europe\, including in the UK and Greece\, and continues working both in the U.S. and Europe. Among his television roles as series regular\, Skordi played Silas Manatos in Prime Suspect\, and in the U.S. he featured in episodes of popular series such as Scorpion\, The Blacklist\, and The Last Ship. Skordi wrote Onassis the Play and performed it at the Stella Adler Theatre in Los Angeles and is now bringing the play to Atlanta and New York. \nCOVID POLICY \nWe are excited to be back in the theatre with you! Three Georgia communities have sister city agreements with South Korea: Atlanta – Daegu; Cobb County – Seongdong-Gu; and Gwinnett County -Gangnam-Gu \nThe Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) in Savannah has an established relationship with ports of Korea and offers six weekly shipping services to the Port of Busan. GPA’s Brunswick Port also offers fortnightly shipping services to Incheon\, Masan\, Pyongtaek and Kunsan. \nAbout Yoonjoo Park \nConsul General Park earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Seoul National University in 1993 and a master’s degree in International Trade and Investment from George Washington University in 2002. \nHe passed the High Diplomatic Service Examination and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995.
