Georgia’s exports to China slowed to $3.2 billion in 2014, an 18 percent year-to-year decline from $3.9 billion after nine straight years of steady growth.

The state also fell three spots from the No. 8 exporter to China to No. 11 among U.S. states.

But it’s not all bad news, according to the U.S. China Business Council, which complies state-by-state data on exports to China. Nationally, exports to China were flat at $120.8 billion, showing that the market is maturing, opening opportunities for more valuable exports as the Chinese economy grows more balanced and consumer-driven, the council said.

Georgia’s top five products categories exported to China were paper products ($770 million), transportation and equipment ($479 million), machinery except electrical ($305 million), waste and scrap ($267 million) and crop production ($195 million).

Georgia has a trade office in Shanghai and is set to hire a new managing director for investment recruitment in Beijing by the end of June.
