Duisburg, Germany-based concrete company Xella International GmbH, the world’s largest manufacturer of autoclaved aerated concrete, opened a plant in Adel last week.

The plant is to produce panels for floors, roofs and walls for commercial and residential construction projects.

Located in Cook County, the plant will have easy access to Interstate 75. It opened with 55 employees and expects to double that by the end of 2008. The company’s headquarters will be based in Atlanta.

The new facility is an existing plant that the company acquired in November that has a production capacity of 250,000 cubic meters of aircrete, a lightweight form of concrete.

Xella North America Inc. was incorporated last year after acquiring a majority holding in Contec Mexicana, an aircrete producer in Monterrey, Mexico, on the Texas border.

Xella generated worldwide sales of over 1 billion euros in 2006.
