A Korean supplier of chemicals to the automotive industry is investing $11.2 million to set up a factory in Toombs County that will supply the nearby Hyundai Metaplant.

Located in the Toombs Corporate Center on U.S. Highway 1 in Lyons, Ga., Shinsung Petrochemical Inc.’s new factory will employ 30 people, with construction set to be completed by 2025.

Shinsung is no stranger to the United States — or Hyundai — having set up an operation adjacent to the auto maker’s first U.S. plant in Montgomery, Ala., in 2010.

Established 50 years ago, Shinsung has its head office in Seoul with three Korean factories in Eumseong, Gyeongju and Gwangju. The company claims to have 7.3 percent of the global automotive sealant market.

Sealants, films, mastic and adhesives are used in various parts of the manufacturing process, improving the performance of metal presses, waterproofing seams where panels come together, coating parts under the car to reduce noise and improve strength, and fusing door panel pieces together.

“We look forward to joining Georgia’s network of automotive suppliers, providing adhesive and sealant solutions for manufacturers nearby. We are excited to be in Toombs County in Georgia,” said Chan Woo Park, COO of Shinsung, in a news release.

Accompanied by company executives including Justin Hong, who runs the business in Montgomery, Mr. Park visited the site in Lyons recently and met with officials from the Toombs County Development Authority

The project is the 18th announced supplier to the Hyundai Metaplant in Bryan County, which is racing to the finish line to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Toombs County has a population of 27,000 and in addition to Lyons boasts the cities of Vidalia, known globally for its sweet onions, and Santa Claus, Ga.
