The Atlanta office of the international law firm Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue has announced that the firm will open an office in Shanghai later this year.
Mason Cargill, a partner, told GlobalFax in a telephone interview last week that the firm’s application to establish an office in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has been approved by its Ministry of Justice.
Shanghai, he added, was chosen for the firm’s office because of its increasing importance as a financial center. “Shanghai, which has 12 million people living in a space the size of that inside I-285, is becoming a financial center and the New York of China,” he said.
Among the Atlanta office’s clients with facilities in the Shanghai area, he cited Portman Holdings and Wolverine, a Huntsville, Ala.-based manufacturer of copper tubing for air conditioners.
Jones Day has 21 locations in centers of business and finance throughout the world. With some 1,300 lawyers, it ranks among the world’s largest firms.
