Hunaina Sultan Al Mughairy, the Sultanate of Oman's ambassador to the U.S., receives a warm greeting from Dan Papp, president of Kennesaw State University, during the ambassador's visit to the Kennesaw campus.

Kennesaw State University’s annual international awards ceremony March 22 is set to honor Hunaina Al-Mughairy, Oman’s ambassador to the U.S.

Appointed in 2005, Ms. Mughairy was the first Arab woman to serve in that diplomatic capacity. An economist by trade, she spoke at the university during its Year of the Arabian Peninsula in 2014. She will receive the university’s Global Public Service Prize for her work advancing the cause of Arab women and advocating for stronger ties between the U.S. and Oman, especially on the commercial side.

The event will also highlight an array of internationally oriented faculty and alumni as a way to showcase the university’s global connections and relevance.

Stella Xu, who handles China initiatives for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, will receive the distinguished alumni award, while Ming Chen, professor of theater and performance studies, will take home the distinguished faculty award for international achievement. The Shanghai-born Ms. Chen is an international authority in scene design.

Angela Khoury, a native of Lebanon and executive director of Atlanta’s Alif Institute, which helps foster understanding by promoting Arab culture , is to receive the international community partner award.

The event’s keynote speaker is U.S. Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet.

The awards are backed by the Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth Foundation and organized by KSU’s Division of Global Affairs.
