Valmiera Glass, a Latvian manufacturer specializing in fiberglass products, has announced plans to spend $20 million over five years on a new plant in Dublin, Ga.

The company aims to eventually hire 150 workers at the 80,000-square-foot facility, which sits on 40 acres in an industrial park on Interstate 16. It will make heavy use of the Port of Savannah, according to a news release from Gov. Nathan Deal’s office.

Mr. Deal touted the announcement as the first substantial investment from a former Soviet country. Valmiera’s fiberglass fabrics are used in the aerospace, oil and gas and automotive industries, which are complementary to Georgia’s strongest sectors, according to the release.

The company had exported products representing some 14 percent of its revenues to North America but aims to use its new beachhead to better serve customers in the U.S. and Canada, executives said.

“This manufacturing facility will provide new opportunities and strengthen Valmiera Glass Group’s position in the global marketplace,” said Andre Heinz Schwiontek, board member and vice president of Valmiera Glass Group Joint-Stock company, Valmieras stikla šÄ·iedra.
