Malcolm McKechnie, who was Canada’s consul general in Atlanta from 2003-2005, has been appointed Canada’s ambassador to Spain with concurrent accreditation to the principality of Andorra.

Since leaving Atlanta in October 2005, Mr. McKechnie has been Canada’s chief protocol officer based in Ottawa.

He joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1971 and has served at the Canadian embassies in Mexico City, Paris and Washington as well as the Canadian Consulates General in New York and Los Angeles.

In 1993, Mr. McKechnie became director of the United States Transboundary Division in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

From 1995-97, he was director of media relations in DFAIT and served as director of communications for APEC ’97 in Vancouver, Canada. In 1998, he was posted to Rome as minister counselor for political and public affairs and served as charge d’affaires from 2001-2002. Before moving to Atlanta he also served as director general of the communications bureau in DFAIT.

Mr. McKechnie’s appointment was announced on Aug. 31 by Maxime Bernier, Canada’s minister of foreign affairs.
