SUMMARY:Author Talk: John McIntyre's 'Multinational Enterprises and the Challenge of Sustainable Development'
DESCRIPTION:Join Global Atlanta for the next interview in “Authors Amplified”\, a series of virtual book talks in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center spotlighting Georgia voices on international issues.  \nWe’ll be chatting with Professor & Executive Director of Georgia Tech CIBER\, John R. McIntyre\, on his book\, Multinational Enterprises and the Challenge of Sustainable Development\, in a podcast-style interview that will be broadcast live. \nAbout the book (text from the publisher):\n\nTransnational corporations play a role in the design\, diffusion\, and consolidation of sustainable development in the context of globalization and multinational firms. In this timely book European and American contributors analyze this role and explore the complex and dynamic phenomena of economic\, political\, cultural and legal interactions involved. \nIn order to understand this interplay\, the authors examine the practices and organizational behaviors used by multinationals in sustainable development. They also discuss the evolving concepts that multinationals hold about sustainable development and corporate social responsibility and how companies reaffirm these philosophies through their strategy and organizational practices such as human resource development\, marketing\, supply chain\, information technology\, law\, and communications. The authors outline an approach to help identify the key details and motivating factors in decision making. \nScholars\, students and policy analysts in the fields of business\, ecology\, economic development and developmental economics and consultants focusing in corporate planning and strategic analysis will find this original collection of great value. \nAbout the author: \nDr.  John R. McIntyre is founding Director of the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER)\, professor of management (strategy area) with a courtesy appointment in international relations in the Georgia Tech’s Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Mona Tajali's 'Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table'
DESCRIPTION:Women’s history month comes at a fraught time in Iran and Turkey\, two pivotal nations straddling the Middle East and Asia.  \nIn Iran\, the death of a young woman in police custody has thrown the oppression of women into stark relief\, sparking widespread protests led by women over the forced wearing of headscarves that have pressured the hardline regime.  \nIn Turkey\, meanwhile\, women have been asked to carry much of the trauma from an earthquake that has killed nearly 50\,000 people in the southeastern part of the country. \nThese acute issues comes on top of the chronic lack of representation in both countries. Women in Turkey occupy just 17 percent of available parliamentary seats. In Iran\, it’s just 3 percent.  \nThe event. To explore and compare the factors limiting female participation in politics in both countries\, join Global Atlanta for the season kickoff of Authors Amplified\, a series of virtual book talks in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center spotlighting Georgia voices on international issues.  \nWe’ll be chatting with Agnes Scott College Professor Dr. Mona Tajali\, author of Women’s Political Representation in Iran and Turkey: Demanding a Seat at the Table\, in a podcast-style interview that will be broadcast live from Constellations in downtown Atlanta.  \nAbout the book (text from the publisher): \n\nHow have women in many Muslim-majority countries been able to achieve surprising success despite the significant constraints imposed by conservative gender ideology and authoritarian political parties and systems? Through a comparative focus on Iran and Turkey\, Mona Tajili examines the activities and strategies of women’s rights groups across the ideological spectrum. She explores how various groups have negotiated with political elites in order to bolster female political representation and identifies the conditions that stimulate greater support to ease women’s path to political office. Studying how women’s groups manoeuvre within these structures is important to help our understanding of the gendered politics of autocratic regimes. \n\nAbout the author: \nMona Tajali is associate professor of international relations and women’s\, gender\, and sexuality studies at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta\, Georgia. She has authored (with Homa Hoodfar) Electoral Politics: Making Quotas Work for Women (WLUML 2011)\, and several scholarly articles on gender and politics in the Middle East. Since 2007 she has been collaborating with the research wing of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) transnational solidarity network and since 2019 serves as a member of its executive board. \nAbout the series and sponsor: \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Atlanta Global Studies Symposium: Day 1\, Elizabeth F. Cohen\, Author of "Illegal"
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth F. Cohen\, the keynote speaker on the opening day of the Atlanta Global Studies Symposium\, will discuss her recent book\, “Illegal: How America’s Lawless Immigration Regime Threatens Us All.” Cohen will narrate the country’s descent into anti-immigrant panic\, tracing the origins of our obsession with illegality to the country’s first comprehensive immigration restriction law. That nativist legislation paved the way for today’s sprawling enforcement apparatus\, whose budget and power now dwarf that of any other federal law enforcement agency. She will speak about how past legislation can help us confront this crisis of corruption and abuse and what to expect from the new administration. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Roundtable Discussion: Student Views on Inclusion in the Global Workplace
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nWith Atlanta’s growth as a global business hub\, corporate initiatives on diversity\, equity\, and social justice are intersecting in new ways with their mandate to cultivate a culturally competent workforce. \nA new sense of urgency seems to have gripped the business community with the racial reckoning after George Floyd’s death and the inequities spotlighted by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. \nAs one of the most concentrated higher education hubs in the U.S.\, Atlanta is graduating thousands of increasingly diverse future workers who demand bold action on these crucial issues. And with a worker shortage already taking hold in some sectors\, how well companies can meet students’ demands for meaningful social action in their workplace will become a competitiveness issue. \nAre companies ready for this new recruitment reality? Are students empowered to make their voices heard? Or does a diversity divide persist? \nJoin the Race Beyond Borders initiative for a lively\, honest conversation with Atlanta-area students. Race Beyond Borders initiative is coordinated by the Atlanta Global Studies Center.
