SUMMARY:Swiss German Literature Immersion: with Swiss Author Dominic Oppliger
DESCRIPTION:Experience literature like you’ve never heard it before! As part of Georgia Tech’s German course “Einführung in die Literatur”\, you are invited to a special reading with acclaimed Swiss author Dominic Oppliger. \n\n\n\nOnly a handful of authors worldwide write in Swiss German – and Oppliger is one of them. His novel Giftland (2023) is a fast-paced\, poetic road story about a Swiss band touring across America. At Georgia Tech\, he will bring the text to life in Swiss German\, accompanied by projected German and English translations. \n\n\n\nThe program also shines a spotlight on Marina Rumjanzewa’s Schwiizerdütsch (2023)\, offering an outsider’s take on this fascinating language and its role within Switzerland’s multilingual culture. A lively Q&A and discussion with the author will follow. \n\n\n\nCOME TOGÄTHER is a joint initiative between the Consulate General of Belgium\, the Consulate General of Germany\, the Consulate General of Switzerland\, the Honorary Consulate of Austria\, the Honorary Consulate of Luxembourg\, and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta that celebrates the shared language\, diverse traditions\, and our modern lifestyles and collaboration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Swiss Consulate Documentary Screening: 'Inferno in Paradiso'
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta has the pleasure to collaborate once again with the Department of French and Italian of the Emory College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in the context of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo. This year’s Settimana (Oct. 16-22) had the theme “Italian and Sustainability” (L’italiano e la sostenibilità)\, which is why we will be screening the Swiss environmental documentary INFERNO IN PARADISO. \n\n\n\nAbout the film: In Salento\, cancer has increased by 40%; the air\, the earth and the water are poisoned\, the land of the “Mediterranean diet” has become a Hell in Paradise. This beautiful region is being used for a giant garbage dump. How did such pervasive pollution come to this rural area? We traveled South to witness the damage\, to meet those who live in this hell\, and to see if and how they can cope. All is not lost: there is organized resistance\, with criminal and civil cases underway against the Italian State. The film\, beginning and ending in Switzerland\, is a heartfelt cry to put a stop to the unconscionable greed that has so much harmed the people and their land. \n\n\n\nYou will be able to watch the movie in Italian with English subtitles. The Swiss director of the movie\, Tiziana Caminada\, is pleased to join us via video to answer your questions at the end of the screening. The event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin for this insightful story on Thursday\, November 30\, 2023\, at 6:30 PM at Emory University (Goodrich C. White Hall\, room #112). Doors open at 6:30 PM and the screening starts at 7 PM. Refreshments will be served prior to the screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Cleantech Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s annual consumption of resources currently far exceeds the planet’s capacity to regenerate itself sustainably. To preserve the environment for generations to come and to address the challenge of global food security\, it is vital that we shift to cleaner technologies. While efforts in various countries are underway\, global collaboration on cleantech innovation is critical to achieving environmental objectives such as water conservation\, sustainable agricultural practices\, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The ever-growing environmental protection challenges can only be met if the international community works together and coordinates its efforts. \nWith the aim of creating a dialogue and accelerating the sharing of solutions around major environmental challenges across the Atlantic\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, the Swiss Business Hub USA in Atlanta\, and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia (UGA) are partnering to host the 2nd annual Cleantech Symposium. Focused on technologies related to controlled environment agriculture\, urban agriculture and sustainable water management\, the symposium will showcase innovative cleantech solutions from Switzerland and Georgia to make our societies resolutely more sustainable. For Switzerland\, the symposium presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate the vibrancy of its sustainability industry. UGA looks forward to hosting this event as a way to engage with a bustling\, international sustainability industry\, displaying its own research and outreach activities in the area of clean technologies through a poster competition\, and exposing faculty and students to fresh ideas and new possibilities. The Cleantech Symposium is organized with support from the Georgia Center of Innovation. \nOn April 19\, join entrepreneurs and scientists from both Switzerland and the state of Georgia to gain exclusive insights on clean technologies that can effectively address today’s challenges! \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 - The Power of Storytelling (Virtual Book Discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Every February\, Black History Month recognizes the accomplishments\, contributions\, and legacy of African Americans in U.S. history and society\, from activists and civil rights pioneers to leaders in business\, politics\, academia\, culture\, and more. \nThe Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta regularly engages in the Black History Month celebrations to honor the importance of African Americans in shaping the American nation. This year\, we want to highlight the transformative power of storytelling and its potential to raise awareness and bring about change for a social cause. Throughout human history\, stories and narratives have been an essential way of connecting with an audience and appealing to hearts and minds. They enable us to understand a different experience of the world\, and thus enhance our empathy. In the struggle for social justice and equality\, storytelling was\, and still is\, of particular importance to the history of Black people. \nIn this context\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta organizes a virtual book discussion on the book “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel” on February 23\, 2023\, 1pm-2pm EST. \nIn collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta will virtually host Fork Burke (Editor) and Myriam Diarra (Editor) who\, in conversation with Dr. Stephane Dunn\, will discuss their latest publication “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel”. They will provide an insider look into their book which explores the historical and contemporary lived experiences of Black women from the town of Biel/Bienne [Switzerland]. In addition to shedding light on this extraordinary part of the global Black diaspora\, Fork Burke and Myriam Diarra will speak on the importance of storytelling and share ideas on the legacy writing process that preserves the histories of the Black diaspora for future generations. \n\n\n	From the archive:

Rather than a purely commercial exercise\, her wines are an extension of her desire to understand the interaction of terroir and variety and to make wines that are not only a pleasure to drink but reveal something unique and special about the wine styles of her home. \nHer collection of wines includes a fresh and vibrantly youthful Chasselas from Geneva aptly named Glou Glou Chasselas\, a range of Chasselas from the distinct terroirs of the Vaud\, and a selection of indigenous varieties and wine styles from the Valais. She assembles each project first by understanding the vineyards\, then guiding the winemaking to be as minimalist as possible. Thus\, what is in the bottle is a pure reflection place and variety. While this may seem overly academic\, it is a great way to begin to understand that the complexity of Swiss wines is truly worth exploring. \n  \nSaturday\, July 9 | Swiss 5k and Fun Run with On Running\n8:00 AM at Fleet Feet-Decatur\n\nFree Event – Break a sweat and demo the best Swiss running shoes in the business – Google Forms RSVP here\nOn Running will be on site with shoes\, gear and local rep Natalie Richardson\nPost run Swiss Slushies and snacks will be served\n\nSunday\, July 10 | Swiss Wine Soirée\n3 PM – 7 PM at Bold Monk Brewing Co.\n\n$40 ticket includes your first glass of Swiss wine\, Swiss inspired small bites\, live Jazz and more – purchase tickets here\nConsul General of Switzerland in Atlanta Peter Zimmerli will give opening remarks\n10 Swiss wines available to try by the glass and by the bottle\nPartners include – Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, Alliance Francaise of Atlanta\, Geothe-Zentrum Atlanta\, Swiss American Society of Atlanta\, On Running\, Perrine’s Wine Shop\, Fleet Feet Decatur and Avant Partir\n\nSpeaker bio: \nPeter Zimmerli\nConsul General\nConsulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta \nBorn in 1957 in Switzerland\, Peter Zimmerli grew up in the canton of Aargau. SUMMARY:MADAME Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Out on Film and the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta for a Pride month celebration. All ticket holders are invited to a special reception at Apres Diem at 6 pm. \nJoin them in celebrating Pride Month with the screening of MADAME by Stéphane Riethauser! Follow the story of a double self-portrait in which a 90-year-old grandmother and her homosexual grandson confide in each other. With sincerity and humour\, the film deconstructs gender stereotypes in depth and with subversive power\, and traces a family saga from bourgeois society with enchanting archive footage. The film will be shown in French with English subtitles and is part of a collaboration between the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta and Out On Film. Make sure to arrive at 6 PM for a delicious cocktail reception! \nLearn more about the film:\nMADAME takes us on an intimate journey where Caroline\, a flamboyant 90-year-old grandmother and her filmmaker grandson Stéphane explore the development and transmission of gender identity in a patriarchal environment. Promised to a domestic life in the 1920s\, Caroline manages to free herself from the clutches of a forced marriage and becomes a successful businesswoman\, defying the social rules of her time. In parallel\, Stéphane struggles to play the role everyone expects in his Swiss bourgeois family\, until the day he comes out of the closet and sets off on a crusade against homophobia and sexism. A family saga based on private archive footage\, MADAME offers a dialog between this extravagant matriarch and her gay grandson\, challenging the taboos of gender and sexuality. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Swiss Cleantech Symposium at UGA: Can Tech Save the World?
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s annual consumption of resources currently far exceeds the planet’s capacity to regenerate itself sustainably. To preserve the environment for the generations to come\, it is vital that we shift to cleaner technologies. While efforts in various countries are underway\, global collaboration on cleantech innovation is critical to achieve environmental objectives such as water conservation\, biodiversity preservation\, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The ever-growing challenges facing the world of environmental protection can only be met if the international community works together and coordinates its efforts. \nWith the aim of creating a dialogue and accelerating the sharing of solutions around major environmental challenges across the Atlantic\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, the Swiss Business Hub in Atlanta\, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Georgia are partnering to host a Cleantech Symposium. Centered around the exhibition “CAN TECH SAVE THE WORLD? Swiss solutions to protect the environment\,” the symposium will showcase innovative cleantech solutions from Switzerland to make our societies resolutely more sustainable. This event will be a unique opportunity for Switzerland to demonstrate the vibrancy of their sustainability industry. UGA looks forward to hosting this event as a way to engage with a vibrant\, international sustainability industry\, display its own research and outreach activities in the area of clean technologies\, and expose faculty and students to fresh ideas and new possibilities. \nOn April 20\, join entrepreneurs and scientists from both Switzerland and the state of Georgia to get exclusive insights on clean technologies that can effectively address today’s challenges! \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Women's Day with the Author Regina Düring
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of International Women’s Day\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta and Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta cordially invite you to a virtual book discussion with Swiss/German author Regina Dürig about her new novel “Federn Lassen” (engl. Losing Skin). \nAn author\, performer\, and lecturer in literary writing\, Regina Dürig has published miniatures\, short stories\, radio plays\, children‘s books\, and young adult novels. She has received numerous awards for her work\, including the Peter Härtling Prize\, the Wartholz Literature Prize\, and the Literature Prize of the Canton of Bern. Born in Mannheim\, Germany\, Regina Dürig moved to Switzerland to study Literary Writing in Biel\, where she currently resides. \nRegina Dürig’s novel “Federn Lassen” dips into different scenes from the life of a woman growing up in the present day\, with the book spanning her life from the ages of four to thirty-eight. It depicts various situations of violence this woman experiences ranging from subtle psychological violence to physical assaults. The book is narrated in the second person\, without ever revealing the name of the woman. Regina Dürig’s novel is a valuable addition to a growing genre\, exploring themes closely connected with the Everyday Sexism and #metoo movements. \nParticipants are invited to order the original German version of the book “Federn lassen” in advance of the book discussion on March 8\, 2022! A limited amount of copies for the price of $20 can be purchased now\, look for the button in the top right corner. As the book has not been published in the U.S. yet\, this is a unique opportunity for participants to get their hands on a novel that – at a time when casual violence against women and minorities is very much in the news – is a necessary contribution to a timely debate! \nEveryone is welcome to join the discussion\, regardless of whether you have purchased the book or not.\nThe discussion will be moderated by Raegan Lemmond\, German Instructor from the University of Alabama. The event will be bilingual\, in German and English. The author will speak German and an interpreter will translate consecutively\, meaning all levels of German are welcome! \n***PLEASE NOTE:\nFor questions about the event or the book please contact the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta at atlanta.info@eda.admin.ch \nFor questions about payments please contact the Goethe Zentrum at info@goetheatlanta.org \n\n\n	From the archive:
