SUMMARY:2024 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series – Pandemic Preparation
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2024 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 1 – March 21\, 2024 at 7:00 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \n\n\n\nMarch 21\, 2024\, Topic: Pandemic PreparationLooking back at the Covid-19 pandemic\, there are many lessons to take away in terms of domestic and international policies. Although this pandemic seems to have waned\, how can we apply these lessons to future pandemics? Will countries cooperate\, and will a consensus emerge on how to manage globalhealth challenges? \n\n\n\nSpeaker: TBA \n\n\n\nPlease note\, topics and speakers are subject to change dates. \n\n\n\nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. To view the other 2024 topics or learn more about Great Decisions\, visit Gciv.org/programs/gd. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonica Schoch-Spana\, PhDSenior Scholar\, Research Professor\nDr. Schoch-Spana\, a medical anthropologist\, is a Senior Scholar with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and a Research Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Since 1998\, she has focused her public health career on generating and applying evidence to advise policymakers and practitioners on how to collaborate with private citizens\, businesses\, and faith- and community-based groups in efforts to manage catastrophic health events\, both effectively and equitably. Her areas of expertise include community resilience to disaster\, public engagement in policymaking\, crisis and emergency risk communication\, health equity\, and public health emergency management (readiness/response/recovery). \n\n\n\nDuring the COVID-19 pandemic response\, Dr. Schoch-Spana has diligently translated social scientific insights into actionable recommendations for policymakers and practitioners\, including as co-Principal Investigator for CommuniVax—a national ethnographic research coalition whose expert advisory group and 6 local teams partnered with communities of color to tackle COVID-19 vaccine access and acceptance issues and to put equity at the center of the pandemic recovery process. She has also collaborated in generating an ethical framework for the allocation of COVID-19 vaccines\, advanced understanding of the pandemic’s mental health challenges\, contributed to decision-making guidance for governors on safe reopening strategies\, consulted on crisis standards of care and their communication to the public\, and spotlighted the need for a transformative pandemic recovery process focused on the whole person. \n\n\n\nDr. Schoch-Spana’s national advisory roles include formerly serving on the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the US Environmental Protection Agency and on the Resilient America Roundtable of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM)\, which she also cochaired. She has held appointments to numerous other NASEM committees including\, most recently\, those focused on building public trust in public health emergency preparedness and response (PHEPR) science\, enhancing community capacity and resilience to floods in Southeast Texas\, and expanding medical countermeasure delivery and increasing uptake though public-private partnerships. She presently serves on the Executive Board to the CDC and NSF-sponsored Public Health Extreme Events Research Network (PHEER). \n\n\n\nOver the course of her scholarly career\, Dr. Schoch-Spana has helped guide the direction of policy and practice in public health emergency management such that planning and operations are more behaviorally realistic and contribute to health equity; public health communicators are better equipped to meet the population’s informational needs in an emergency; citizens have more venues to contribute their practical\, intellectual\, and ethical inputs to readiness and response endeavors; and national and local communities are striving to withstand and learn from disasters\, rather than merely respond to them. \n\n\n\nFrom 2003 to 2017\, Dr. Schoch-Spana worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Center for Health Security; prior to that she worked at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies\, starting in 1998. She received her PhD in cultural anthropology from Johns Hopkins University and a BA from Bryn Mawr College. She is Certified in Public Health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:GCIV Member's Only Reception with an International Women of Courage Awardee
DESCRIPTION:Join the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) for an exclusive member’s only reception with an International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awardee. \nThe U.S. Secretary of State’s annual International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awards recognizes extraordinary women from around the world for demonstrating exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace\, justice\, human rights\, gender equality\, and women’s empowerment\, often at great personal risk and sacrifice. \nIndividuals are nominated by U.S. Embassies abroad and awardees participate in a U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Awardees will meet both the U.S. Secretary of State and the First Lady\, then visit other communities in the U.S.\, like Atlanta\, Georgia\, to connect with their professional American counterparts. \nOne of the many benefits of GCIV membership is the opportunity to connect with emerging world leaders traveling to our state. Please take advantage of this unique experience and join in demonstrating Atlanta’s famous southern hospitality! \nGCIV is honored to host Bakhytzhan Toregozhina (ba-hit-ZHAN to-re-GO-zhi-na)\, a civil society activist from Kazakhstan. \nToregozhina has campaigned for the protection of fundamental human rights in Kazakhstan for nearly 25 years. Since January 2022\, she has been the head of “Qantar 2022” a coalition of civil society organizations working to assist victims and document human rights violations associated with the widespread unrest that occurred in Kazakhstan last January. \nThroughout her career\, Toregozhina has been a leading voice representing victims of torture\, abuse and politicized repression. She defended people persecuted for the peaceful expression of their beliefs and successfully campaigned for the release of many political prisoners. As a result of her work\, she repeatedly faces threats and harassment. \nHer decades-long commitment to this arduous work stands as testament to the vital role human rights defenders can play in holding governments accountable and encouraging respect for basic rights and freedoms. She continues these efforts today through Qantar 2022 as well as her public foundation “Ar.Rukh.Khak” (Dignity.Spirit.Truth). \nThe GCIV member’s only reception will be at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights next Monday evening. Light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. \nThis is a free event\, but you must be a current GCIV member and RSVP to attend. Space is limited. RSVPs are confirmed on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nNot a member or unsure about your membership status? Please contact Emily Shaw at emily@gciv.org or 404-832-5560 to RSVP and to join or to renew an expired membership. \n\n\n	From the archive:
