SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: The end of globalization?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, the annual 2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 4 – March 25\, 2021 at 7:30 PM. Former CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center. Senior Partner at King & Spalding. Expertise in Globalization in the Modern Era. \nAs the United States enters another election season\, the merits and drawbacks of globalization are again being debated by the presidential candidates. With the passing of the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s America First doctrine\, protectionist policies have become more prevalent\, challenging globalization. What is globalization and how will it be affected by protectionist trade policies? How will the United States and the world be affected by such policies? Is globalization really at an end\, or in need of a refresh? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. To view the other 2021 topics or learn more about Great Decisions\, visit Gciv.org/programs/gd. \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program by helping facilitate discussion groups and lecture series that give participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of world affairs. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: Roles of International Organizations in a Global Pandemic
The 2021 virtual lecture series is free\, but registration is required to receive the event link. \nMar. 18\, 2021 Topic: Roles of International Organizations in a Global Pandemic\nLecture by: Dr. Jennie Ward-Robinson\, Senior Advisor to the Dean of College and Arts and Sciences and Director of Operations and Outreach\, Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora at GSU; Strategic Advisor to the Global Health Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst; member of the Board of Directors at the Smithsonian Science Education Center and the Dean’s Council at Emory Rollins School of Public Health \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has thrust the World Health Organization (WHO) into the limelight\, for better and for worse. While some of the former Trump administration’s criticism of the organization is unfair\, the response to the early stages of the pandemic left many experts wanting more from the WHO. What is the WHO’s role in responding to international pandemics? What can be done to improve the WHO’s response to future global health crises? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: The Korean Peninsula
Political Commentator for Atlanta Radio Korea (AAM1040 located in Atlanta) and Political Columnist for News Today and W’s (an Atlanta-based Korean weekly news magazine) \nThe Korean Peninsula is facing a defining era. Attempts by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and former U.S. President Donald Trump to repair the rift between North and South have lost any momentum as Pyongyang continues to test long-range missiles for its nuclear weapons program. As the rift between the U.S. and China grows further\, South Korea may end up in the middle of the two superpowers. What does the future hold for the U.S. relationship with the ROK? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. Director of the Center for Global Information Studies. Expert in Chinese and Russian politics. \nThe Covid-19 crisis has put a massive strain on what was growing a positive economic and political relationship between China and the continent of Africa. As Chinese President Xi Jinping’s centerpiece “Belt and Road initiative” continues to expand Chinese power\, the response to the spread of Covid-19\, as well as the African government’s growing debt to China\, has seen pushback. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Georgia Council for International Visitors in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, the annual 2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 4 – March 25\, 2021 at 7:30 PM. The 2021 virtual lecture series is free\, but registration is required to receive the event link. \nFeb. 25\, 2021 Topic: Struggles Over the Melting Arctic\nLecture by Dr. Anna Stenport\, Professor of Global Studies; Chair\, School of Modern Languages; Founding co-Director\, the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, Georgia Tech. Co-author of Introduction: Arctic Modernities\, Environmental Politics\, and the Era of the Anthropocene \nFormer U.S. President Donald Trump left many scratching their heads when it was rumored that he was looking to purchase the large island nation of Greenland from Denmark. While any potential deal seems highly unlikely\, the event shows the changing opinion within the U.S. government toward engagement with the Arctic region. Because of climate change\, large sheets of arctic ice are melting\, exposing vast stores of natural gas and oil. With Russia and China already miles ahead with their Arctic strategies\, can the U.S. catch up? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: Persian Gulf Security Issues
Dr. Rubin is also the Associate Editor of the journal Terrorism and Political Violence. His areas of expertise include the Middle East and the Gulf as well as Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Policy. \nThe Persian Gulf remains tense as the rivalry between the regional powers of Saudi Arabia and Iran continues. Tensions escalated in early 2020 as the United States began to intervene in the Gulf\, launching an airstrike that killed two Iranian military commanders. What are the historical influences that have led to these tensions? What role\, if any\, should the United States play? Is using military force a viable foreign policy option for 2021 and beyond? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech \nThe shutdown of global supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic brought to the forefront an issue with the high level of global economic interdependence: what happens when one country is the main source for an item\, say face masks\, and then can no longer supply the item? Countries suddenly unable to meet the demand for certain supplies are faced with growing calls for economic nationalism. What are some of the lasting effects that the pandemic could have on global supply chains and trade? How would this affect national security? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. SUMMARY:GCIV Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture: Artificial Intelligence and Data
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence and Data \nLecture by Daniel Schiff\, Georgia Institute of Technology \nPolicymakers in many countries are developing plans and funding research in artificial intelligence (AI). Global growth is slowing\, and not surprisingly\, many policymakers hope that AI will provide a magic solution. The EU\, Brazil\, and other Western countries have adopted regulations that grant users greater control over their data and require that firms using AI be transparent about how they use it. Will the U.S. follow suit? \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program that gives participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of current world affairs. \n \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Middle East: Regional Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mona Tajali\, Ph.D.\, Agnes Scott College \nAs the presidency of Donald J. Trump passes the halfway point\, the Middle East remains a region in turmoil. The Trump administration has aligned itself with strongmen in Saudi Arabia\, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt\, which along with Israel have a common goal of frustrating Iranian expansion. What will be the fallout from policy reversals such as withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord and moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: The Rise of Populism in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eleanor Morris\, Ph.D.\, Agnes Scott College \nMass migration\, and the problems associated with it\, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit\, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s\, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders\, however\, these parties are invariably illiberal\, anti-American\, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin\, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Seymour Goodman\, Ph.D.\, Georgia Tech \nCyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat\, which can include foreign interference in elections\, industrial sabotage and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st century warfare. Is the United States prepared to respond to such threats? \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Decoding U.S.-China Trade
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Wedeman\, Ph.D.\, Georgia State University \nThough arguably the most advanced economy in the world\, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade. These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship\, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness\, while swelling China’s. Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China. What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices? There are several available\, yet they remain mostly unused. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 -- Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:State and non-state actors today must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. How are actors using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena? What are the implications for U.S. policy? \n\nSpeaker: Michael Jablonski\, Georgia State University                   \n\n\n	From the archive:
