SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Middle East: Regional Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mona Tajali\, Ph.D.\, Agnes Scott College \nAs the presidency of Donald J. Trump passes the halfway point\, the Middle East remains a region in turmoil. The Trump administration has aligned itself with strongmen in Saudi Arabia\, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt\, which along with Israel have a common goal of frustrating Iranian expansion. What will be the fallout from policy reversals such as withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord and moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Does the United States see a path forward in troubled states such as Syria\, Yemen\, Libya and Iraq? Is the United States headed toward war with Iran? \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: State of the State Department & Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Vince Farley\, Retired Foreign Service Officer\, U.S. State Dept \nDuring the Trump administration\, the usual ways of conducting diplomacy have been upended. Many positions in the State Department have never been filled\, and meetings with foreign leaders such as Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin have been undertaken with little advance planning. What effect are these changes having now\, and how will they affect ongoing relationships between the United States and its allies and adversaries? \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Nuclear Negotiations: Back to the Future?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Robert Kennedy\, Ph.D.\, Georgia Tech \nNuclear weapons have not gone away\, and the Trump administration has brought a new urgency\, if not a new approach\, to dealing with them. The President has met with Vladimir Putin as the New Start Treaty with Russia comes up for renewal in 2021\, the first presidential summit ever with Kim Jong-un occurred to discuss denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula\, and President Trump has decertified the Obama nuclear deal with Iran. To what degree should past nuclear talks guide future U.S. nuclear arms control negotiations? Can the art of the deal apply to stabilizing our nuclear future? \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: The Rise of Populism in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eleanor Morris\, Ph.D.\, Agnes Scott College \nMass migration\, and the problems associated with it\, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit\, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s\, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders\, however\, these parties are invariably illiberal\, anti-American\, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin\, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Refugees & Global Migration
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jeanne Grussendorf\, Ph.D.\, Georgia State University \nToday\, no countries have open borders. Every state in today’s global system has its own laws and policies about who is permitted to cross its borders\, and how they will do so. Who determines whether someone is a refugee or a migrant? SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Seymour Goodman\, Ph.D.\, Georgia Tech \nCyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat\, which can include foreign interference in elections\, industrial sabotage and attacks on infrastructure. Russia has been accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States and China is highly committed to using cyberspace as a tool of national policy. Dealing with cyber conflict will require new ways of looking at 21st century warfare. Is the United States prepared to respond to such threats? \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Decoding U.S.-China Trade
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Wedeman\, Ph.D.\, Georgia State University \nThough arguably the most advanced economy in the world\, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade. These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship\, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness\, while swelling China’s. Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China. What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices? There are several available\, yet they remain mostly unused. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 -- Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:State and non-state actors today must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. How are actors using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena? What are the implications for U.S. policy? \n\nSpeaker: Michael Jablonski\, Georgia State University                   \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 -- Foreign Policy Lecture Series: The Waning of Pax Americana?
DESCRIPTION:The Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series is sponsored by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) and is based on a briefing book published annually by the nonpartisan Foreign Policy Association.\n\nDuring the first months of Donald Trump’s presidency\, the U.S. began a historic shift away from Pax Americana\, the liberal international order that was established in the wake of World War II. Since 1945\, Pax Americana has promised peaceful international relations and an open economy\, buttressed by U.S. military power. In championing “America First” isolationism and protectionism\, President Trump has shifted the political mood toward selective U.S. engagement\, where foreign commitments are limited to areas of vital U.S. interest and economic nationalism is the order of the day. Geopolitical allies and challengers alike are paying close attention.\n\nLearn more about the series and how to register here.\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 - Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Russia’s Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:The program of 8 lectures is followed by discussion on current international topics at the Dunwoody United Methodist Church on Thursday evenings from January 11 to March 1\, 7:30 – 9:00 PM\n\nThe series is sponsored by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) and is based on a briefing book published annually by the nonpartisan Foreign Policy Association.\nUnder President Vladimir Putin\, Russia is projecting an autocratic model of governance abroad and working to undermine the influence of liberal democracies\, namely along Russia’s historical borderlands. Russia caused an international uproar in 2016\, when it interfered in the U.S. presidential contest. But Putin’s foreign policy toolkit includes other instruments\, from alliances with autocrats to proxy wars with the U.S. in Georgia\, Ukraine and Syria. How does Putin conceive of national interests\, and why do Russian citizens support him? How should the United States respond to Putin’s foreign policy ambitions? \nPlease Register in Advance by mailing the Registration form and payment or by credit card through the GCIV website. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Lecture Series: Latin America’s Falling Economies
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Great Decisions lecture series\, GCIV welcomes Emory University Associate Professor Tom Rogers to discuss the political climate of Latin America. \nThe pendulum of Latin American politics is swinging rightward once again. Yet as the “pink tide” recedes\, the forces of change have more to do with socioeconomics than ideology. Dramatic economic and political crises have coincided in countries like Brazil and Venezuela. Still\, the final result for Latin America may be the emergence of centrist\, pragmatic modes of governance\, and with them\, opportunities for the U.S. to improve relations. The new administration must look beyond the neoliberal model of the 1990s\, and develop an approach to relations fit for the 21st century. \nEvents in this series cost $40 and includes a briefing book. SUMMARY:Saudi Female Tech Pioneer Speech: Impact and Change - Paths to Social Innovation in Saudi Arabia
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) and organized by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture\, Saudi social entrepreneur Lujain Al Ubaid will explore the current state of social entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia through her experiences as an innovator in the field at three public and two invite-only events in Atlanta\, Georgia. \nSocial entrepreneurship is not always the first business venture associated with Saudi Arabian society; in an environment heavily fixated on either for-profit business ventures or entirely non-profit social work\, the general Saudi public is not informed of the possibility of social enterprise as a professional avenue. Despite an absence of technical expertise and recognition\, many leaders for social change have been developing models for people to participate in social programming and projects for sustainable chance. \nLujain Al Ubaid\, founder of Tasamy for Social Entrepreneurship\, is one of these leaders. \n“I [was] angry and frustrated by the undelivered promises to youth allowing them to create positive change and impact\,” Al Ubaid explains. She therefore became one of the first leaders to develop the infrastructure for social entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia\, and moreover\, to create some of the terminology associated with the field in Arabic. \nHer organization\, Tasamy for Social Entrepreneurship\, focuses on finding sustainable solutions to social problems by encouraging and empowering youth\, community leaders\, as well as private and governmental institutions to achieve social entrepreneurship in the Gulf region. Drawing on her experiences in Saudi Arabia\, India\, and elsewhere\, Lujain Al Ubaid will highlight her journey to creating Tasamy in her talk.  She will look at ways in which youth in Saudi Arabia can be helped along the path to creative entrepreneurship and volunteerism through online incubation and incentivizing – and her prominent role in doing so as the founder of one of the few social entrepreneurship organizations. \nShe will present on: \n● 8 December\, 11:00am-12:00pm\, Agnes Scott College\, free. \n● 8 December\, 7:00pm-8:30pm\, Arnall Golden Gregory LLP\, Suite 2100\, free to GCIV members \nAl Ubaid will also speak at three invite-only events at the Mayor’s Office and two Fortune 200 companies. \nFor more information\, contact Farah Amir at farah@gciv.org or by phone at 404.832.5560\, ext. 21.\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:2016 Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series - Cuba and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Cuba and the U.S. \nSpeaker: Dr. Jennie Lincoln \nThe U.S. announced in December 2014 that\, after decades of isolation\, it has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marks a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in one of the darkest moments of the Cold War — the Cuban missile crisis. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon\, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship\, once defined by antithetical ideologies\, into the 21st century. \n  \n\n\n	From the archive:

DESCRIPTION:The Rise of ISIS\n \nSpeaker: Ms. Houda Abadi\n \nBorn out of an umbrella organization of Al-Qaeda in Iraq\, the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) burst onto the international stage after it seized Fallujah in December 2013. Since then\, the group has seized control of a number of critical strongholds in the country and declared itself a caliphate\, known as the Islamic State. SUMMARY:2016 Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series - The United Nations
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations \nSpeaker: Dr. Rashid Naim \nOn the eve of the international organization’s 70th birthday\, the United Nations stands at a crossroads. This year marks a halfway point in the organization’s global effort to eradicate poverty\, hunger and discrimination\, as well as ensure justice and dignity for all peoples. But as the UN’s 193 member states look back at the success of the millennium development goals\, they also must assess their needs for its sustainable development goals — a new series of benchmarks\, which are set to expire in 2030. With the appointment of the ninth secretary-general in the near future as well\, the next UN leader is bound to have quite a lot on his or her plate going into office. \n\n\n	From the archive:
