SUMMARY:Visual Evocation: Poland by Night - Panel Discussion on Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University’s Office of International Initiatives for a panel discussion on the visual evocation of night photography in Poland. Panelists will discuss technical\, visual and emotional responses elicited from pictures taken by Polish photographer Krzysztof Masiuk. The unique canvas-printed photographic collection shows night scenery of Polish cities and towns. Special illumination and the play of light capture magical moments in each photograph and bring out the beauty of Poland from a whole new perspective. DESCRIPTION:Georgia State University International Center Global Presentation Series \nMental Health Status and Needs Assessment for Mental Health Care Services of the Adult Syrian Refugee Population Resettled in Metropolitan Atlanta: A Cross-sectional Survey \nPresented by Skander M’Zah\, MD\n2017 MPH Candidate\, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University\n2015 Fulbright Scholar \nDr. Skander M‘Zah\, a physician and active participant in the movement known as the Arab Spring\, was called home to Tunisia by the Red Crescent to respond to the emerging refugee crisis on the border with Libya. Thousands of displaced families arrived each day\, fleeing violence at home only to encounter new challenges securing access to basic needs\, including adequate healthcare. Dr. M’zah carried his experience in the camps to his medical residency in family medicine in the public hospital in Tunis. where he created a professional training program for clowns to bring humor and light to disadvantaged children. \nAs a global health student he spent this past summer in Gaziantep\, Turkey\, 20 miles from the Syrian border to participate in the World Health Organization‘s (WHO) emergency response to Northern Syria. DESCRIPTION:The Emerging Global Issues Forum on Forced Migration\, Immigration\, and Security will explore the causes\, consequences and policy responses to the rapid increases in forced migration and refugee movements around the world. The forum will bring together thought leaders and academics with a diverse range of practitioners and policymakers.We will explore the driving factors of migration; policy and legal responses to the consequences of forced migration including civil and human rights ramifications; security implications like terrorism\, crime and violence\, economic costs and benefits\, and the public perception and stigma revolving around displaced people. We will examine the implications and responses for the Atlanta metropolitan area\, as a microcosm of how these challenges play out in the U.S.\, and a locus of national and local debates. The OBOR initiative seeks to link countries along the Ancient Silk Routes to advance cultural understanding\, economic development\, and diplomatic ties. It places unprecedented demand on China to profoundly reach out to and understand other cultures and civilizations. He has also recently directed the National Endowment for the Humanities funded: COIL Institute for Globally Networked Learning in the Humanities\, which has engaged 22 U.S. and 26 international universities in developing collaborative\, shared\, networked classrooms. He was Professor of Film and New Media at SUNY Purchase College where he developed a Cross-Cultural Video course in which SUNY students co-produced videos over the Internet with students in Turkey\, Lithuania\, Mexico\, Belarus\, and Germany. His own films have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Whitney Museum in NY. As a media artist he is best known for his Floating Cinema\, a choreography of media images moving across the water at night.
