SUMMARY:Understanding China's Approach to Cognitive Warfare with Josh Baughman China Aerospace Studies Institute
DESCRIPTION:Cognitive Warfare is seen as its own domain in modern warfare alongside the four military domains defined by their environment (land\, maritime\, air and space) and the cyber domain connects them all. Cognitive Warfare operates on a global stage as we are all digitally connected and uses information technology and the tools\, machines\, networks and systems to seek out it’s target: intelligence.  \n\n\n\nChina\, as a strategic competitor to NATO\, describes Cognitive Warfare as the use of public opinion\, psychological operations\, and legal influence to achieve victory. Combat psychology has significant impact on the warfighter’s ability to function with a focus on recording facial information\, emotional changes and psychological states of soldiers to determine their combat status.  Outside of the battlefield\, influence can also affect law\, rule-of-order and civil constructs. \n\n\n\nRegister now for this special event! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJosh Baughman\, China Aerospace Studies Institute\nJoshua D. Baughman (“Josh”) currently serves as an analyst at Air University’s China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI). His research centers on China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) activity in the cyber and information domain\, as well as work on the PLA Rocket Force. He guest lectures at the National Defense University and Institute of World Politics on topics such as China’s cyber strategy and misinformation efforts. He presents and publishes regularly\, and has received international recognition for his work on the metaverse\, generative AI and the cognitive domain. Josh previously worked at National Defense University (NDU) College of Information and Cyberspace (CIC)\, U.S. Air Force Academy in the Military and Strategic Studies Department and the Eisenhower Center for Space and Defense Studies\, and at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Collectively\, he spent three years living in Beijing working as an editor and journalist on China security issues\, as well as a television host\, director\, writer and producer.  \n\n\n\nJosh is a published author in the field of nuclear energy and has expertise in China space activities.  Current areas of interests in research include artificial intelligence\, branding/marketing and China.    \n\n\n\nHe holds a BA with a double major in International Relations and German from Centre College and an MA in International Security from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and has attained professional proficiency in Mandarin and German.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation
DESCRIPTION:Book Presentation – The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation\nLeveraging its absolute power\, low human rights advantage\, and tolerance by other countries\, the Chinese Communist Party has transformed China into a giant corporation. Living and working are not rights but privileges granted by the party. State-owned firms are business units or subsidiaries\, private firms are joint ventures\, and foreign firms are franchisees of the party. ‘China\, Inc.\,’ enjoys the agility of a firm and the vast resources of a state. Meanwhile\, foreign firms competing with Chinese firms can find themselves matched against the mighty Chinese state. China\, Inc. will interest many readers: it will compel business scholars to rethink state-firm relationships; assist multinational business practitioners in formulating effective strategies; aid policymakers in countering China’s expansion; and inform the public of the massive corporate organization China has become and how democracies can effectively deal with it. \nShaomin Li is Professor and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University. His research has appeared in Journal of International Business Studies\, Harvard Business Review\, The Economist\, The Wall Street Journal\, and The Financial Times. He is author of Bribery and Corruption in Weak Institutional Environments (Cambridge University Press\, 2019). \nCo-Sponsors: \n\nAtlanta Council on International Relations\nChina Research Center\nOld Dominion University Strome College of Business\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:American Perspectives on Transatlantic Data Flows
DESCRIPTION:ORGANIZED BY SCHELLER COLLEGE OF BUSINESS\, LAW AND ETHICS AREA \nCost: Free \nThe EU and the United States are at an impasse when it comes to transatlantic data transfers. After the invalidation of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield negotiators on both sides of the Atlantic are trying to find a way forward to guarantee privacy rights and enable transatlantic data flows. \nThis session featuring Peter Swire\, a leading U.S. scholar and former government official on these issues\, follows the Wilson Center’s June 24 discussion with Austrian privacy activist Max Schrems. Having heard perspectives from Europe\, the focus this time will be on U.S. perspectives. \nHow do U.S. views on privacy rights and data flows compare with European understandings? What might a “comprehensive deal” look like between the U.S. and the EU? What are the fundamental roadblocks and how can they be overcome? Has the appetite for stricter regulations increased in the U.S.? \nJoin Georgia Tech CIBER and Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business for a transatlantic conversation on July 1st at 10 AM ET/4 PM CET to discuss the broader implications of the EU-U.S. impasse on data privacy. \nKeynote Speaker\nPeter Swire\nProfessor of Law & Ethics\, Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business \n\n\n  \n\n  \nPanelists\nAshley Gorski\nSenior Staff Attorney\, ACLU \n  \n  \n  \nTheodore Christakis\nProfessor of European and International Law\, University Grenoble-Alpes \n  \n  \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Japanese Economy: Successful Recovery\, Challenges\, Foreign Policy\, and US Relations' a Lecture by Dr. Shujiro Urata
DESCRIPTION:The Japanese economy appears to have recovered from a two-decade long recession\, as it is currently experiencing growth that has continued for seven consecutive quarters. A low unemployment rate of only 2.7 percent and\nrecord high corporate profits also reflect the favorable economic situation. However\, future prospects are rather dim unless Japan can successfully deal with various structural problems\, which include a shrinking and ageing\npopulation\, increasing government debt\, and low exposure to the global economy. Shujiro Urata\, Ph.D. is Dean and Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies\, Waseda University. He is a former Economist\nat the World Bank\, and prior to that\, a Research Associate at the Brookings Institute. Professor Urata examines Japan’s current economic situation identifying the problems and discussing the importance of adopting an activist\ninternational economic policy with a focus on the US-Japan relationship in order to overcome the problems and achieve sustained economic growth. \n\n\n	From the archive:
