SUMMARY:Webinar - From Exports to Exit: How International Business Can Fuel Startup Success
DESCRIPTION:When Sean Casey helped found helicopter parts supplier Rotorcorp\, he quickly noticed that companies who deploy these “flying pickup trucks” weren’t confined within U.S. borders. From far-flung fisheries and oil wells to expansive cattle ranches and infrastructure monitoring\, Robinson helicopters were being put to use all over the world in a variety of utilitarian\, and sometimes unorthodox\, applications. \n\n\n\nThe problem\, he soon found\, was that those who served them with spare parts were largely focused domestically\, and online ordering\, if it existed at all\, was a far cry from the e-commerce ease most consumers expect in their personal shopping. \n\n\n\nMr. Casey set to work expanding in two interlinked directions: digitizing inventory and improving online sales\, while also broadening company’s geographic reach\, relying on a variety of freely available resources — and carefully crafted personal relationships — to become an expert in exports. \n\n\n\nRotorcorp achieved liftoff\, and Mr. Casey exited the company in early 2025\, taking his talents and hard-won international business lessons to Dragon Q Energy\, a startup that distributes solar power poles outfitted with batteries to off-grid locations in need of reliable electricity. The company is set to launch a pilot project in Zambia as it raises capital to scale into disaster relief\, telecom\, commercial and military applications. With this new venture\, Mr. Casey is building exports into the strategy at the outset\, rather than bolting it on as an afterthought. \n\n\n\nAttendees will glean the following takeaways: \n\n\n\n\nHow local connections\, free resources and commitment to global business can help unlock export success\, pairing U.S. strengths with global demand\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to bring e-commerce solutions and scale to a fragmented legacy industry stuck in analog processes\n\n\n\n\n\nLessons on growing globally as a startup\, and how international business can boost resiliency\, attract capital and accelerate a business sale\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSean Casey\, Chief Commercial Officer\, Dragon Q Energy\nA native of Rochester\, New York\, Sean Casey is the proud father of four children and has called Atlanta\, Georgia home since 1997. After co-founding Rotorcorp in 2011\, alongside his brother Daniel Casey\, Sean assumed the leadership role as the company’s CEO in 2018. \n\n\n\nA military veteran\, Sean served as an M1 Abrams armored crewman in the U.S. Army and he embodies the leadership principles honed during his service. Sean is a hands-on operational leader\, taking a n active role in defining the future state of the business\, ensuring the correct people\, tools\, and resources are in place to achieve the strategic objectives. \n\n\n\nWith a passion for export and international trade\, Sean has a a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) designation and  was appointed by President Biden to serve a second term as a member of the Industry Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC) for Aerospace Equipment at the U.S Commerce Department in Washington D.C.\, is an active member of the District Export Council (DEC) through the U.S. Commercial Service\, and serves on the Small Business Initiatives Committee of Vertical Aviation International (VAI). .Mr. Casey is also a Presidential ‘E’ Award for Exports winner. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Murata: Tiny Parts\, Huge Impact on Global Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:When things are going right\, the small things are easy to ignore. Not so when supply chains are stressed — the essential becomes magnified\, no matter how tiny. \n\n\n\nThat’s what happened with Murata\, who in 1973 became one of the earliest Japanese investors in Georgia\, setting up a plant to make capacitors in car radios. The Kyoto-based company\, now with global annual revenues of approximately $1.7 Trillion yen\, holds about 40 percent of the world’s market share for capacitors\, small ceramic parts produced by the trillions each year to store and release power within electronic devices. \n\n\n\nWhen a tsunami hit Japan’s northeast coast in 2011 and an earthquake shook the country\, electronics supply chains were scrambled. Everything\, from cell phones and digital cameras to appliances and EVs\, relies in some way on Murata’s parts — more than 1\,000 go into a typical smartphone and potentially 30\,000+ slated for a fully autonomous electric vehicle. \n\n\n\nMurata had already been diversifying its sourcing around the world\, including in Southeast Asia\, to be closer to end customers. It also deepened research spending to ensure it could serve advanced industries\, like increasingly computerized cars\, with innovative solutions. That blend of diversification and R&D continues today. Murata Electronics North America\, meanwhile\, has a new headquarters in Atlanta\, Ga.\, and maintains a distribution center in Rockmart\, Ga. \n\n\n\nToday\, an uncertain global trade landscape threatens to inflict another shock to supply chains around the world. Join GSU-CIBER and Global Atlanta to hear from Murata Electronics North America’s CEO\, David Kirk\, on how the company is dealing with increasing volatility in high-value industries where the smallest parts can make the biggest impact. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Kirk\, VP\, Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd.President & CEO\, Murata Electronics North America\nDavid is responsible for various functions within the Americas including Sales/Marketing\, Operations and Corporate Technology\, and Innovation. The Americas is a critical region for design-in activity that results in Global Sales within the Electronics industry. Murata has made multiple acquisitions and integrations on a global basis including Peregrine Semiconductor (pSemi)\, Vios Medical\, Eta Wireless\, Resonant\, and RF Monolithics (RFM). \n\n\n\nHe started his career as a Product Engineer with Murata and moved into the Director of Marketing role. He then became President and CEO of RFM\, which was a public company from 1999 to 2011. Upon coming back to Murata in 2012\, he was instrumental in RFM’s acquisition by the parent company in Japan. \n\n\n\nDavid is the first non-Japanese person to lead Murata in the Americas and become an officer of the parent company Murata Manufacturing Company headquartered in Kyoto\, Japan.  \n\n\n\nHe came to the United States in the late 1970s on a track scholarship and graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in Electrical Engineering. \n\n\n\nDavid and his wife\, Tammi\, have four grown children and live in McKinney\, TX (in the Dallas area). His hobbies include golfing\, hiking\, cycling (gravel)\, fishing\, and their seven grandchildren. \n\n\n\nDavid enjoys the challenge of globalizing Murata and specifically mentoring the next generation of leaders in following the company’s philosophy of contributing to the advancement of society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey takeaways:  \n\n\n\n\nHow Murata has diversified its manufacturing locations around the world in partnership with customers and what that has meant for the company’s U.S. operations\n\n\n\n\n\nMurata’s approach to continuous improvement in research and development\, its moves up the value chain over the last 50 years\, and efforts to showcase innovation in relatable ways like robots and other consumer-facing items\n\n\n\n\n\nThe company’s approach to trade uncertainty and supply chain volatility and how the company balances its Japanese sensibilities\, including long-term strategy\, with a nimble approach in global markets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series -- Interview With Ravi Saligram\, CEO of Newell Brands: Learning and Leading Through a Global Turnaround
DESCRIPTION:When Ravi Saligram joined Newell Brands in 2019 as President & CEO\, the company was experiencing poor performance\, low employee engagement and excessive complexity. In 2020\, Ravi and the world-class leadership team he’d built were also faced with leading through the unexpected and monumental issues presented by COVID. \nDespite these challenges\, employee engagement scores increased significantly\, and the company’s turnaround efforts persisted.\nWhile Ravi announced his May retirement earlier this year\, there’s no doubt the company has strengthened during his tenure. Complexity and overhead costs have been reduced; Project Ovid\, a multi-year initiative consolidating 23 unique supply chains into one\, was successfully implemented; a new innovation operating model was introduced\, and innovations were launched that leveraged COVID trends; automation has been scaled and the company has best-in-class productivity and safety records. Notably\, Newell Brands was named one of Fortune’s Most Admired Companies in 2022 and 2023\, a recognition it had not previously received. \nRavi is a three-time public CEO\, also having led OfficeMax\, Inc. and Ritchie Brothers. Despite arriving in the United States with less than $20 in his pocket\, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, and has lived in six countries and worked in many more during his nearly 40-year career\, which began at Leo Burnett in Chicago. \nDuring this webinar\, Ravi will speak with Global Atlanta Managing Editor Trevor Williams and share the following key takeaways:\n• The importance of a people-first approach and how to drive a culture of engagement\n• How companies can foster diversity\, inclusion and belonging and be a force for good\n• The necessity of cross-cultural competency and how international experience shapes perspective \n \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar -- Seeds of Growth: How AGCO Built a Global Tractor Powerhouse from Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:When Martin Richenhagen joined AGCO Corp. in 2004\, it was already a $3 billion publicly traded firm. But sixteen years later\, when he retired from his posts as chairman and CEO\, it was a Fortune 500 powerhouse combining some of the biggest brands in the business of agricultural equipment. With $10 billion in sales\, AGCO doubled in size during his tenure to more than 20\,000 employees around the globe. \nThis extraordinary growth story\, rooted in metro Atlanta\, is linked with Mr. Richenhagen’s vision to expand aggressively via acquisitions while peering constantly around the corner to see future trends in food and farming. \nRather than being absorbed in the halls of academia\, Mr. Richenhagen’s business acumen developed from natural curiosity and hustle\, starting during his early years as a religion scholar and French teacher and developing alongside a  love of horses that propelled his ascent to the highest levels of competitive dressage. \nJoin the Georgia State University CIBER in the latest of its ongoing International Business Webinar series for a discussion with Mr. Richenhagen moderated by Global Atlanta Managing Editor Trevor Williams. \nAbout Martin Richenhagen: \nMartin Richenhagen was the first and for many years the only German CEO of a U.S.. Fortune 500 company. Born and raised in Cologne\, he studied theology\, philosophy and worked as a French teacher before he changed fields and started a successful international business career that led him to 16 years at the helm at AGCO ending in 2020. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nHow multinational corporations should navigate a strategy of growth through acquisitions versus organic sales\nLessons on hiring\, training and deploying executives in various emerging and developed markets and across functions\, from management to marketing to manufacturing\nHow leaders can use embrace cultural differences as an advantage rather than a hindrance\n\nContact Paula Huntley with any registration questions at gsuciber@gsu.edu.\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Sports Diplomacy as a Key Tool in U.S. Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:While the United States leveraged the power of sports even before the ping-pong diplomacy era\, the Sports Diplomacy Division at the U.S. Department of State was established in the wake of 9/11 as a means of reaching out to youth in the Middle East through soccer. Its scope has expanded to include all regions\, thousands of participants\, and the full spectrum of sports. The division’s people-to-people sports exchanges open doors in hard-to-reach places and engage communities at the grassroots level.\nWhile a government-led Ministry of Sport is responsible for sports in many countries\, the United States has a different model with leagues\, federations\, collegiate sports\, youth athletics\, and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee driving the sports space. The U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy Division works with these American sports entities and partner non-profits to manage its core sports diplomacy programs. The office often serves as the linchpin between these organizations and U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world to manage four pillars: Sports Envoys\, Sports Visitors\, the International Sports Programming Initiative\, and the Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP): the espnW GSMP to empower women and the Sport for Community GSMP on disability rights. \nKey Take-Aways: \n1. What is sports diplomacy? How does the U.S. Department of State use sports diplomacy in foreign policymaking?\n2. What are key priorities to the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy Division in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs? What skills are necessary to achieve its goals?\n3. How can young professionals in international affairs/business become involved in the global sports diplomacy movement? How can it relate to their work? \nFeaturing: \nTrina Bolton\, U.S. Department of State \n\n\n	From the archive:

Tamer Cavusgil\, Georgia State University\nDr. Pervez Ghauri\, University of Birmingham\nDr. Leigh Anne Liu\, Georgia State University \nModerated by:\nSebastian van der Vegt\, Untold Communications \nEmerging markets\, rapidly transforming and dynamic economies\, have been the focus of numerous firms in search of growth opportunities over the past four decades. These economies share such common phases of evolution as rapid economic transformation\, market liberalization\, and impressive gains in competitiveness — often accompanied by significant social and political change and urbanization. \nWhile emerging markets\, along with the rest of the world\, experienced one of the most devastating disruptions caused by the global pandemic of 2020\, the phenomenon of rapid economic transformation and the story of emerging markets remain very relevant. Despite having to endure economic shocks\, emerging markets continue to be highly dynamic and full of market potential. \nIn this conversation\, professors Cavusgil\, Ghauri\, and Liu will provide an update on the current state of emerging market growth and transformation. They will also offer their expectations of their future evolution. What policy measures need to be in place to support emerging market multinationals? How should advanced economy multinationals adjust? In the face of global competition for resources and capital\, will emerging market firms be able to deploy new technologies\, sustainable use of resources and collaborative business models? \nHaving just completed the 3rd edition of their book\, Doing Business in Emerging Markets\, Cavusgil\, Ghauri and Liu will also discuss the features in the new edition. Of interest to both practitioners and students of international business\, readers will find a highly analytical treatment of these growth economies in this edition of the book. New to this edition are 13 original cases written by expert scholars on emerging markets. Each case provides a different country context and managerial set of challenges to be analyzed. \nThis webinar will be moderated by Sebastian van der Vegt\, Untold Communications\, who will raise questions of contemporary interest to practitioners and scholars of emerging markets. \nKey takeaways: \n\nWhat is the current significance of emerging markets to the global economy?\nWhat does the future hold for emerging markets?\nWhat are pressing questions for scholarly research on emerging markets?\n\n  \nThis program is FREE and open to all\, but registration is required. \n\n\n	From the archive:
