SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Does Cultural Resilience Matter in Overcoming Major Disruptions? The Italian Experience with the Global Health Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The global pandemic continues to test national economies\, business enterprises\, and individuals. Responses to this health emergency have varied\, some nations weathering the storm better than others\, while others completely failing the test. \nWhat does research suggest in terms of effective responses of nations\, business leaders\, and individuals to major disruptions or crises? What have previous experiences with mega disruptions taught us? What coping strategies\, traits or values have proven to be helpful? \nTurning to the current pandemic\, the panelists will focus on the specific case of Italy (with occasional comparison to others)\, and identify the response of the public sector\, business leaders\, and the society as a whole to the health emergency. In addition\, they address the question: ‘What have the Italians learned from this experience\, and what they have re-discovered about themselves?’ \nKey takeaways:\n• What has been the role of cultural resilience in shaping individual-level responses to major crises? What values\, behaviors\, and traits seem to be exhibited by individuals.\n• Can cultural resilience help explain business community responses? What have been the resources and strategies deployed by companies?\n• How can the public sector leverage cultural resilience while responding to national crises? Do’s and don’ts from the Italian experince. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Family Business Navigating Global Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Family business makes up an important part of the global economy. Due to the involvement of three overlapping elements (i.e.\, family\, business\, and ownership)\, family business is different from other types of organizations. While some family businesses struggle to survive into the third generation\, others tend to perform well over time compared to their corporate counterparts. \nAs humanity copes with the effects of the current COVID-19 crisis\, family businesses may be able to play an important role in helping both businesses and consumers in navigating through the many market and technological uncertainties that this crisis has created\, and no doubt will further create in the future. Yet\, we know very little about that role. The purpose of this webinar is to develop a deeper understanding of that role so that thoughtful managers and policy-makers can develop more forceful responses to the new challenges they are now facing due to the coronavirus pandemic. \nThe webinar will address the following: \n\nThe unique features of family businesses that provide advantages for them to respond to the COVID-19 crisis;\nThe challenges family businesses face and how they can convert these challenges into business opportunities during and in the post-pandemic world;\nThe role of organizational and national culture in shaping the effectiveness of these response strategies.\n\nFeaturing:  \nDr. Qian Cecilia Gu\, Georgia State University \nFrancesca Sanguineti\, University of Pavia \nDr. Attila Yaprak\, Wayne State University \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Case Competition
DESCRIPTION:The International Business Case Competition is an annual event in which students from several different universities\, especially minority serving institutions are placed in groups to solve a real-world business problem. The challenge provides students with the opportunity to meet students from other universities as well as gain insight on real-world business issues. As the program provides each student with beneficial skills and experience\, it also has strict criteria that need to be followed. The students are assigned to teams of four students\, but with the requirement that every student from the team is from a different university and majoring in a distinct field area. This will allow students to work through multiple cross-cultural obstacles\, including different study habits\, learning methods\, and even diverse university cultures. The fields represented during the Case Competition are Finance\, Accounting\, Marketing\, and Management & Operations. \nAt the start of the first day\, the students are given the time to participate in a variety of events that are meant to build up their trust and familiarity with each other. Later\, each team is given their case and has the rest of the day to come up with the solution. On day two\, the teams stand in front of a panel of judges and present their solution to the case. \nThe International Business Case Competition is funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a goal of mounting the competitiveness in the global market. The competition not only allows students to work together in teams\, but it also prepares them to enter the global job market\, in which they will be confronted by actual business problems. \n\n\n	From the archive:
