SUMMARY:Year of Morocco: The Case of the Ben M'Sik Community Museum
DESCRIPTION:Partnering With a Moroccan University: The Case of the Ben M’Sik Community Museum \nThe Ben M’sik Community Museum (BMCM) is a burgeoning museum housed at Faculty of Letters and Humanities\, Ben M’sik\, Casablanca\, Morocco\, located at the heart of the diverse Ben M’sik neighborhood of Casablanca. The decision to create the Ben M’sik Community Museum\, the first of its kind in Morocco\, is an indication of its commitment to establish deeper contacts with the community it serves. The BMCM’s mission “to preserve memory by interpreting\, exhibiting\, and promoting the stories of the diverse populations of the neighborhood and its region” supports the University’s own mission of increasing the number of interactions with partners belonging to its socio-economic environment. \nOf the less than 20 museums in Morocco\, the BMCM is one of two located in Casablanca. The BMCM is unique in its focus as a center of community engagement. Unlike traditional museums that primarily collect and display antiquities and great works of art\, the BMCM specifically seeks to document the day-to-day lives of local residents. \nFeaturing: Dr. Catherine Lewis\, Assistant Vice President for Museums\, Archives and Rare Books\, KSU \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Envisioning the Future and Understanding the Realities of India’s Urban Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:India\, a land of ancient wisdom and cultural world heritage\, is home to the world’s first\ncities. In the last twenty years it has experienced unprecedented growth\, development\, and change\, altering its physical\, cultural\, and social landscape with dramatic effect. Today\, its cities embody a paradoxical mix of globalization\, modernity\, and advanced technology with regionalism\, tradition\, and religion\, juxtaposed with extreme poverty and\ninequality. \nSustainability\, in all its facets has emerged as a key problem in India’s development story. Urbanization is not an independent variable of development\, but an integral part and product of the development process itself. Therefore\, there is a need to understand urban issues as part of a larger development process affecting both rural and urban communities and livelihoods\, employing historical and contemporary perspectives (with regional and global implications). \nBuilding off research in the fields of Sociology\, Biology\, and Architecture\, the conference will examine contemporary urban growth in India and its effects on the everyday ecologies of its people. The goal is a more holistic understanding of India’s urban ecologies\, their interdependence\, and the need for more sustainable strategies for urbanization. India’s cities can provide applicable lessons to the more global concerns of urbanization around the world. \n  \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Managing Sustainability and Food Security in Conflict Regions
DESCRIPTION:Food insecurity is both a cause and consequence of conflict. Managing food insecurity poses increasing challenges to the international development community.  Food insecurity as a cause of conflict is often linked to international market dynamics\, which can send shock waves across continents\, as the world experienced during the 2007/2008 global food price crisis. Food insecurity as a consequence of conflict is related to the destruction\, disruption\, and diversion of productive resources during conflict. The purpose of this workshop is to generate greater awareness of the importance and challenges of food security management as a conflict prevention policy and a humanitarian response mechanism in conflict-affected regions. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Year of Russia: Russia's Domestic Politics
DESCRIPTION:Media often report that Vladimir Putin is highly popular as president of Russia\, but why does this matter if he is a dictator\, as media also often report? In fact\, Russia’s political system is more complex than simple notions of “dictatorship” or “democracy” would have it\, and public opinion is key to the regime’s stability. Survey research\, including certain experimental methods\, can be used to understand the sources of Putin’s support and the prospects for it to continue\, including the surge that Putin reaped after Russia annexed Crimea. \nSpeaker: Henry Hale \nHenry E. Hale is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW) and the author of Patronal Politics: Eurasian Regime Dynamics in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge\, 2015). Specializing on political regimes\, ethnic politics\, and post-Soviet politics\, his previous work has won two awards from the American Political Science Association\, including one for his book Why Not Parties in Russia (Cambridge\, 2006). During 2009-12\, he was director of the Institute for European\, Russian\, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs\, and he is currently editorial board chair of Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:A Conversation With Jessica Colotl
DESCRIPTION:Kennesaw State University students will be hosting Jessica Colotl on campus\, for a conversation on her 2010 arrest that made national headlines and sparked the immigration debate. She will be joined by Dr. Marie Marquardt\, of Emory University. \nFollowing the arrest of Ms. Colotl\, in 2011 the Georgia Board of Regents’ implemented Policy 4.1.6 and Policy 4.3.4\, a pair of rules which ban undocumented students from five major public universities in Georgia and prohibit them from qualifying for in-state tuition. Georgia is one of only three states – including Alabama and South Carolina – to institute an admissions ban against undocumented students in public higher education.\n\nThis event will mark the first time Ms. Colotl – now a KSU graduate – speaks publicly on KSU’s campus specifically concerning her experience in 2010 as an undocumented youth and college student here in Georgia. Dr. Marquardt will facilitate the conversation through a series of questions focused on highlighting the human effects of immigration policy. Offering a human-focused counter narrative to the current political rhetoric\, this event explores the heavy toll that restrictive immigration and education policies take on Georgia’s youth.\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Remembering: International Struggle for Civil and Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:he fifty-year anniversaries of major events of the American civil rights movement provide occasion for reflection on milestone events in the American civil rights movement. We take pause to recall the significance of Brown v. Board of Education\, the Freedom Rides\, the March on Washington\, and the major civil rights legislative achievements. Various commemorative events are taking shape across the United States\, from the unveiling of the plaque of the Birmingham church bombing\, an event that took the lives of four African American girls\, to the re-enactment of the March on Washington. The multiple meanings of universal themes of liberty\, equality\, justice\, fairness\, and equal opportunity have characterized an era of sacrifice\, mourning\, and guarded optimism that marked the African American fight for freedom. \nKennesaw State University’s Center for African and African Diaspora Studies invites scholars\, artists\, activists\, and practitioners to participate in a three-day summit in Kennesaw (an Atlanta suburb) on October 28-30\, 2015. The summit is designed as a multi-disciplinary platform to remember\, reflect\, celebrate and interrogate historical and contemporary civil and human rights issues that are both national and transnational. It incorporates discussions in all formats – visual and performance arts\, spoken word\, fine arts installation\, panel and roundtable discussions\, and open forum discussions. \n\n\n	From the archive:
