SUMMARY:Emory University: Annual Turkish Lecture Series With Author Elif Batuman
DESCRIPTION:The Halle Institute for Global Research invites you to attend a lecture by Elif Batuman\, author of critically acclaimed books such as The Idiot and The Possessed which explore her identity as a Turkish-American woman\, intentionality about the precision of language\, and befuddlement in the early age of email. \n\n\n\nIn her first book\, The Possessed\, Elif Batuman wrote about her experiences studying Russian literature as a PhD student in America\, Russia\, and Uzbekistan. She did not initially think of her attraction to Russian literature – which is also manifested by the title of her first novel\, The Idiot – as being related to her Turkish family background\, or to her experiences in Turkey as a child. \nAfter The Possessed came out in 2010\, she moved to Istanbul\, where she worked at Koç University and wrote for the New Yorker magazine. She lived in and visited Istanbul regularly between 2009 and 2015. During that time\, she saw the beginning of the Syrian Civil War\, the opening of the Museum of Innocence\, the full run of The Magnificent Century\, the Gezi protests\, HDP parliamentary success in 2015\, and the Suruç bombing. Witnessing such a politically vital and complicated period of history\, experiencing the tensions of national identity more closely\, and coming to understand\, as an adult\, the country that shaped her parents\, prompted Elif to rethink her attraction to Russian novels and her understanding of Turkish history. Through the lens of current events\, she came to discover that works of Dostoevsky are more closely related to the ideology of Atatürk than she originally realized. \nThis event includes a seated luncheon. Please RSVP by Thursday\, January 23\, to reserve a seat \n\n \n \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Turkish Foreign Relations: the U.S.\, Europe\, and the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Since coming to power in 2002\, Erdogan has reoriented Turkish foreign policy in order to situate Turkey as a regional power in the Middle East. However\, this pivot has not quite been successful.  Turkey is isolated in the Middle East\, with few friends and many threats\, ranging from the Assad regime to ISIS.  Following the July 15th coup attempt\, the United States’ ability to work with the Erdogan government in overcoming the trauma of the coup will have important long term consequences for whether Turkey maintains its course of reconciliation with the West\, or if it chooses instead to pursue Russia as a regional ally. \nThe Turkish Lecture Series is sponsored by The Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning at Emory University\, the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University\, and the American-Turkish Friendship Council in Atlanta. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:The "Comfort Women" Debate: Views From Korea\, China\, and Japan
DESCRIPTION:While the plight of the so-called “comfort women” has long been seen as a Korean issue\, it is simultaneously a broader matter concerning historical justice\, human rights\, and peace in East Asia. Three experts share information on how the “comfort women’s” long struggle for justice has been received by the public in Korea\, China\, and Japan. Participants will theorize possible resolutions that could honor the victims\, promote the value of human rights\, and facilitate cooperation among the three countries. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (REALC). \n\n\n	From the archive:
