The Manely Firm, an Atlanta-based international family law practice renowned for its extensive cross-border work, has officially opened a new office in London, a first step in its global expansion.

CEO and founder Michael Manely shared insights about the strategic move across the pond in a recent conversation with Global Atlanta and how Brexit impacts the international family law landscape.

International Expertise with a Local Touch

The Manely Firm is recognized for its international family law services, handling complex cases involving divorce and child custody that span multiple countries. With a strong presence in Georgia, the firm is solidifying its international footprint by establishing a base in London.

“We wanted to transition from being a Georgia firm that does international law to an international firm headquartered in Georgia,” Mr. Manely explains. “London, with its vibrant international community and central role in global affairs, was the perfect location for our first international office.”

Building a Team for Global and Local Needs

The London office, which opened in June, starts with a team of three: two attorneys and one paralegal. One of the attorneys is Georgia-based but resides in London, ensuring that U.S. interests and expatriate concerns are well-represented. The other attorney, a seasoned solicitor with rights of appearance in all London courts, brings a wealth of experience in family law.

This blend of international and local expertise enables The Manely Firm to provide comprehensive legal services to a diverse clientele.

The firm anticipates handling a mix of cases similar to those they manage in the U.S., but with an international twist, Mr. Manely asserts.

“Our work involves issues that are universal, whether they originate in Atlanta, New York or London. The population we serve in London will be the same kind of international community we serve elsewhere,” he says, noting that this includes clients involved in cross-border disputes and expatriates navigating family law matters.

Navigating the Post-Brexit Landscape

Brexit has added a layer of complexity to legal matters involving the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.

“Brexit has made people more mindful of their legal standing and the differences between UK and EU laws. This awareness is crucial when dealing with cases that involve multiple jurisdictions,” Mr. Manely says.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Manely views this as an opportunity to better serve clients by helping them navigate the evolving legal landscape.

Future Plans for Global Expansion

The opening of the London office is just the beginning of The Manely Firm’s global ambitions. Plans are under way to establish a presence in Düsseldorf, Germany, by early 2025.

Additionally, the firm is considering locations in Latin America, with Mexico City and Panama City as potential candidates for a 2026 launch.

“We have a map in our reception area that shows pins of where we have had cases, and they are extensive. They include Moscow, all points unknown and known, except for Antarctica. In many of those cities, it would make sense for us to be there if the model works as we open in London, Düsseldorf, and Mexico City or Panama,” Mr. Manely says.

While The Manely Firm expands globally, it remains committed to its roots in Georgia.

The firm continues to operate six offices in the state, including in Atlanta, Columbus, Lawrenceville, Marietta and Savannah.

A new office in Charlotte, N.C., is set to open by the end of the year.

The opening of The Manely Firm’s London office marks a significant step in becoming a truly global law firm. With strategic expansions planned for Europe and Latin America, and a commitment to both local and international clients, the firm is making a lasting impact on the international family law landscape.
