The recent addition of three attorneys to the Hong Kong office of Troutman Sanders LLP is the latest step in the Atlanta-based law firm’s efforts to better serve its clients in Asia, Roger D. Williams, the office’s managing partner, told GlobalFax.

“We plan to grow this office with more specific expansions of attorneys and staffs in order to provide even better services to our clients, whether they are large companies or small- to medium-sized enterprises,” he said by email.

He added that the firm might open other satellite offices, including one in Shanghai, but that “Hong Kong remains the business capital of Asia.”

Troutman Sanders announced on Jan. 30 that three attorneys would be leaving the Hong Kong office of Toronto-based law firm of Stikeman Elliott LLP to join its two attorneys already in Hong Kong. Troutman Sanders opened its Hong Kong office in 1997.

While the office originally opened to assist Fortune 1000 companies, it currently represents more than 150 smaller- to medium-sized firms, he said.

“We can help SMEs establish their businesses in Hong Kong and China…comply with local business licensing and permitting requirements, provide nominee director and nominee shareholder services and even open local bank accounts necessary for SMEs to begin operations in Hong Kong and China,” he said.

“It is hard enough for SMEs to keep up with the red tape of laws and regulations in their home jurisdiction, so the prospects of climbing the learning curve in Asia can be daunting,” he said. “We keep abreast of all Hong Kong business requirements to help SMEs navigate these foreign waters in order to compete for their fair share of Asian business.”
