United Parcel Service Inc. Chief Operating Officer David Abney has been named to succeed Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President and CEO Dennis Lockhart as chairman of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta

“There is no question that we live in an age of global interdependence.  Because of our commercial connections, the fate and fortune of our city is very much intertwined with the global economy,” Mr. Abney said in a news release, noting that the council plays a key role in bringing together Atlanta’s international community.

The council also named two new board members at its June 10 board meeting: Hugh “Beau” Cummins III, president and CEO of SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, and Bernard Taylor, senior partner at Alston & Bird LLP

Formed in 2010, the council hosts ambassador luncheons and collaborates with various organizations on educational programs designed to help Atlantans better understand global issues and trends.
