SUMMARY:A Musical Journey to Cyprus: Traditional Songs of Love\, Sorrow\, and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, Cyprus has been variously described as ‘the island of love’\, ‘the birthplace of Aphrodite’\, ‘the blessed isle’\, ‘the land of lemon and olive trees’\, among many other things. But in the past half century\, Cyprus has also been known as a land of pain and sorrow; an island of division and loss. \n\n\n\nOn this ‘Musical Journey to Cyprus\,’ Nicoletta Demetriou (voice)\, Nikitas Tampakis (viola)\, Roger Mgrdichian (oud)\, and Panayotis League (laouto and perscussion) explore this varied identity\, as expressed through the island’s music and song. \n\n\n\nJoin these accomplished musicians on an imaginary journey to Cyprus\, as they sing about the joys and intricacies of love\, the pain and sorrow of loss\, and the hope for better days to come. \n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. Registration is required.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Knowledge\, a Conversation with Felwine Sarr
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nDue to inclement weather related to Hurricane Helene\, this event has been postponed. We will update you with more information at a later date. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nOne of the great intellectuals of our time\, committed to the decolonization of knowledge from an African perspective\, Senegalese thinker Felwine Sarr is invited for the first time in Atlanta to present his work and his intellectual journey. Felwine Sarr will be in conversation with Lauren Tate Baeza\, Curator of African Art at the High Museum of Art and Axelle Karera\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Emory University. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Time magazine featured Felwine Sarr as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His thinking is developing in different directions and on several fronts at once. With philosopher Achille Mbembe\, he is the initiator of the “Ateliers de la pensée”\, which has been bringing together writers\, thinkers\, artists and academics from Africa and the diaspora in Dakar since 2016. The same year\, he published Afrotopia [University of Minnesota Press\, 2020]\, an essay on the future of the continent and the need to pursue decolonization. Together with art historian Bénédicte Savoy\, he is also the author of the landmark “Rapport sur la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain” [The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage. Toward a New Relational Ethics\, 2018]\, logical compensation for colonial predation. Felwine Sarr now teaches at Duke University\, where he brings knowledge produced in Africa and promotes an ecology of knowledge from different geographies and traditions. More recently\, he has played a major role\, alongside numerous intellectuals\, activists and citizens\, in the defense of Senegalese democracy\, and advocates a deepening of democracy in Africa. Today\, he is working to create a “pluriversity” in Dakar\, a university based on the plurality of knowledge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Nix Mann Endowed Lecture
DESCRIPTION:What is ‘classical art’? Why is it that some ancient Greek and Roman artifacts\, but only some Greek and Roman artifacts\, got to move across cultures and time\, assuming a ‘classical’ status and dictating culture as they go? \nIn this year’s Nix Mann Endowed Lecture titled “The Shifting Shape of Classical Art” Caroline Vout\, professor of Classics and director of the Museum of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge\, examines how different periods have reinvented what classical art is through digging\, dealing\, drawing. It ends by asking whether classical art has a future.\nIn 1992 the architectural firm of Nix Mann & Associates (now Perkins + Will) endowed this lecture to bring distinguished speakers to campus on an annual basis. \nDr. Vout’s latest book\, Classical Art: A Life History from Antiquity to the Present\, is available in the Carlos Museum Bookshop and will be available at the lecture as well. \n \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Transcendent Deities Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 2002\, India embarked on a plan to brand itself for investment and tourism with its “Incredible India” campaign\, which brought together every government sector to market the nation. The campaign was extremely successful\, asserting India’s cultural and economic power in global markets and raising awareness of international brands in domestic ones. This was the beginning of “Brand India.” Now\, after a huge influx of multinational products and advertising and a proliferation of malls—from fewer than 10 in 1999 to more than 750 at present—global capitalism has transformed India’s commercial culture. Brand loyalty\, according to one shopkeeper\, is becoming this generation’s bhakti—their devotion\, their faith. \nThe bazaar\, however\, is an important site of resistance and mediation for this process. It is a temple and training ground where people and objects are entangled in complex networks that create and sacralize various moods and modes of behavior. This is especially the case within the main bazaars of the Pakka Mahal area in Banaras—a center for religion\, culture\, and commerce for millennia. \nIn a lecture titled “Marketing Gods: Mediating Divinity in the Bazaars of Banaras\,” Andy Rotman\, Professor of Religion and South Asian Studies at Smith College examines the ways that gods have functioned like brands in the bazaar—defining reputations\, what it means to be reputable\, and the logic of “trust” (vishwas)—and how this works with and against the conception that brands are\, in fact\, gods. \n \n\n\n	From the archive:
