SUMMARY:From Co-Operation to Crackdown: The Muslim Brotherhood and the Gulf
DESCRIPTION:The Center for International and Comparative Law presents Dr. Freer\, Professor of Law at Emory Law\, associated professor in the Emory College of Arts and Sciences\, and senior fellow of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion of Emory University. An internationally recognized scholar of Islam and human rights and human rights in cross-cultural perspectives. Dr. Freer’s talk will trace the origins of state policies towards the Muslim Brotherhood\, as well as provide a brief history of groups inside the Gulf States. Each of the Gulf States has developed a distinct strategy to manage the Brotherhood\, ranging from a soft form of co-optation seen in Qatar to a crackdown in the United Arab Emirates. The rise of Islamist opposition movements during the Arab Spring led governments across the region to focus keenly on the Muslim Brotherhood as it emerged as the primary voice of political opposition. To RSVP\, please contact Eadie Bridges at eibridg@emory.edu. \n\n\n	From the archive:
