SUMMARY:General David Petraeus\, Author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta History Center for an Author Talk with General David Petraeus\, author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nTwo leading authorities—an acclaimed historian and the outstanding battlefield commander and strategist of our time—collaborate on a landmark examination of war since 1945. Conflict is both a sweeping history of the evolution of warfare up to Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine\, and a penetrating analysis of what we must learn from the past—and anticipate in the future—in order to navigate an increasingly perilous world. \n\n\n\nIn this deep and incisive study\, General David Petraeus\, who commanded the US-led coalitions in both Iraq\, during the Surge\, and Afghanistan and former CIA director\, and the prize-winning historian Andrew Roberts\, explore over 70 years of conflict\, drawing significant lessons and insights from their fresh analysis of the past. Drawing on their different perspectives and areas of expertise\, Petraeus and Roberts show how often critical mistakes have been repeated time and again\, and the challenge\, for statesmen and generals alike\, of learning to adapt to various new weapon systems\, theories and strategies. Among the conflicts examined are the Arab-Israeli wars\, the Korean and Vietnam Wars\, the two Gulf Wars\, the Balkan wars in the former Yugoslavia\, and both the Soviet and Coalition wars in Afghanistan\, as well as guerilla conflicts in Africa and South America. Conflict culminates with a bracing look at Putin’s disastrous invasion of Ukraine\, yet another case study in the tragic results when leaders refuse to learn from history\, and an assessment of the nature of future warfare. Filled with sharp insight and the wisdom of experience\, Conflict is not only a critical assessment of our recent past\, but also an essential primer of modern warfare that provides crucial knowledge for waging battle today as well as for understanding what the decades ahead will bring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nGeneral David Petraeus\, US Army (Ret.) is one of the leading battlefield commanders and strategists of our time.  He served over 37 years in the US military culminating his career with six consecutive commands as a general officer\, five of which were in combat\, including command of the Surge in Iraq\, US Central Command\, and NATO/US Forces in Afghanistan.  He subsequently served as Director of the CIA\, following confirmation by the Senate by a vote of 94-0\, during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus is now a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute\, which he established in 2013.  He also serves on corporate boards\, is the Kissinger Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson School\, and is the co-author\, with Andrew Roberts\, of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus graduated with distinction from the US Military Academy\, earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, and has held academic appointments at 5 universities in addition to his current position at Yale.  He is also Co-Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Global Advisory Council\, Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute\, and a member of the Trilateral Commission\, Council on Foreign Relations\, and Aspen Strategy Group.  \n\n\n\nHis awards include four Defense Distinguished Service Medals\, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award\, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor\, the Combat Action Badge\, the Ranger tab\, and master parachutist wings.  He has also been decorated by 14 foreign countries and is believed to be the only person in uniform to throw out the first pitch of a World Series game and do the coin toss for a Super Bowl.  He was runner-up to Vladimir Putin for Time Person of the Year in 2007\, the Daily Telegraph Man of the Year\, twice a Time 100 selectee\, three times a Foreign Policy top public intellectual\, Prospect magazine’s Public Intellectual of the Year\, one of US News and World Report’s Top 25 Leaders\, and sanctioned by Russia (in 2022). \n\n\n\nThis event is powered by ATLVets\, in partnership with BENS\, Atlanta Press Club and VETLANTA \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Author Talk: "Korean American" by Eric Kim with Jean Kim and Kim Severson
DESCRIPTION:New York Times staff writer Eric Kim grew up in Atlanta\, the son of two Korean immigrants. Food has always been central to his story\, from Friday-night Korean barbecue with his family to hybridized Korean-ish meals for one — like Gochujang-Buttered Radish Toast and Caramelized-Kimchi Baked Potatoes — that he makes in his tiny New York City apartment. In his debut cookbook\, Eric shares these recipes alongside insightful\, touching stories and stunning images shot by photographer Jenny Huang. \nPlayful\, poignant\, and vulnerable\, Korean American also includes essays on subjects ranging from the life-changing act of leaving home and returning as an adult\, to what Thanksgiving means to a first-generation family\, complete with a full holiday menu — all the while teaching readers about the Korean pantry\, the history of Korean cooking in America\, and the importance of white rice in Korean cuisine. Recipes like Gochugaru Shrimp and Grits and Smashed Potatoes with Roasted-Seaweed Sour Cream demonstrate Eric’s prowess at introducing Korean pantry essentials to comforting American classics\, while dishes such as Cheeseburger Kimbap and Crispy Lemon-Pepper Bulgogi do the opposite by tinging traditional Korean favorites with beloved American flavor profiles. Baked goods like Milk Bread with Maple Syrup and Gochujang Chocolate Lava Cakes close out the narrative on a sweet note. \nIn this book of recipes and thoughtful insights\, especially about his mother\, Jean\, Eric divulges not only what it means to be Korean American but how\, through food and cooking\, he found acceptance\, strength\, and the confidence to own his story. \n \nAbout the Author\nEric Kim is a New York Times staff food writer born and raised in Atlanta\, Georgia. He worked his way through the literary and culinary world to eventually become a digital manager at Food Network and a senior editor at Food52\, where he amassed a devoted readership for his “Table for One” column. He now hosts regular videos on NYT Cooking’s YouTube channel. A former contributing editor at Saveur\, Eric taught writing and literature at Columbia University\, and his work has been featured in The Washington Post\, Bon Appétit\, and Food & Wine. He lives with his rescue pup\, Quentin Compson\, in New York City. \nAbout the Moderator\nKim Severson is a national food correspondent for the New York Times. She was previously the New York Times Southern bureau chief and\, before that\, a staff writer for the Food section. Severson won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for her contributions to the team that investigated sexual harassment and abuse against women. She has also won four James Beard awards and the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for her work on childhood obesity. She was a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle and\, before that\, an editor and reporter at the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska. Before dedicating herself to food reporting\, she covered crime\, education\, social services and politics for daily newspapers on the West Coast. She has written four books\, “The Trans Fat Solution\,” “The New Alaska Cookbook\,” a memoir called “Spoon Fed: How Eight Cooks Saved My Life\,” and\, in 2012\, “Cook Fight!” a collaborative cookbook with fellow New York Times writer Julia Moskin. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Sanjena Sathian's Novel 'Gold Diggers'
DESCRIPTION:How far would you go for a piece of the American dream? \nA magical realist coming-of-age story\, Gold Diggers by Sanjena Sathian skewers the model minority myth to tell a hilarious and moving story about immigrant identity\, community\, and the underside of ambition. \nA floundering second-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs\, Neil Narayan struggles to bear the weight of expectations of his family and their Asian American enclave. He tries to want their version of success\, but mostly\, Neil just wants his neighbor across the cul-de-sac\, Anita Dayal. \nWhen he discovers that Anita is the beneficiary of an ancient\, alchemical potion made from stolen gold—a “lemonade” that harnesses the ambition of the gold’s original owner—Neil sees his chance to get ahead. But events spiral into a tragedy that rips their community apart. Years later in the Bay Area\, Neil still bristles against his community’s expectations—and finds he might need one more hit of that lemonade\, no matter the cost. \nThis event will be held in person at the Atlanta History Center\, but it will also be livestreamed. Woodruff Auditorium is located inside McElreath Hall. Doors and cash bar will open at 6pm. \nAbout the Author\nA Paul and Daisy Soros fellow\, Sanjena Sathian is a 2019 graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Vanessa Riley
DESCRIPTION:A remarkable\, sweeping historical novel based on the incredible true-life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas\, a free woman of color who rose from slavery to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies. \nGet Tickets\nTickets are $10 for not-yet-members\, $5 for members\, free for Insiders. \nBorn into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat\, Doll bought her freedom—and that of her sister and her mother—from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur\, merchant\, hotelier\, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent.\nVanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant\, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret\, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England. \nFrom the bustling port cities of the West Indies to the forbidding drawing rooms of London’s elite\, Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds\, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history. \nAbout the Author\nIn addition to being a novelist\, Vanessa Riley holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering and a master’s in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University. She also earned BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Penn State University.  She currently juggles mothering a teen\, cooking for her military-man husband\, and speaking at women’s and STEM events. She loves baking her Trinidadian grandma’s cake recipes and collecting Irish crochet lace. You can catch her writing from the comfort of her porch in Georgia\, with a cup of Earl Grey tea. Riley lives in Atlanta. \nPromotional language provided by the publisher. \n\n\n	From the archive:
