SUMMARY:2020 Human Rights Conference: "Rethinking Rights in Times of Crisis: Local and Global Perspectives on Resilience and Dignity"
DESCRIPTION:This is a conference to promote intellectual conversations about the future of our world deeply\, creatively\, conceptually and contextually. Participants can look forward to speakers\, roundtables and workshops addressing issues\, trends and developments surrounding the themes of human rights\, social justice\, gender equality\, global activism as well as diversity and inclusion.\n\nThe Honorable Nadia Theodore\, consul general of Canada\, will deliver the keynote address on human rights in the 21st Century from a Canadian perspective. Consul General Theodore is a government affairs\, international relational and communications leader with over 20 years of progressive Federal Government experience in strategic policy\, communications\, as well as trade and stakeholder affairs. Dr. Wendy S. Hesford of The Ohio State University will also deliver a keynote on gendering human rights and humanitarian violence at the border. Dr. Hesford has published six books including the award-winning “Spectacular Rhetorics: Human Rights Visions\, Recognitions and Feminisms. SUMMARY:Moving Beyond Awareness: Building an Action Campaign to End Human Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:University communities understand the responsibility and value of social responsibility. Human Trafficking is a human rights violation that calls us to seek justice by social change. The International Human Trafficking Institute & CIFAL Atlanta are offering a free ADVOCATE WORKSHOP that will provide attendees with an overview of: \n• Definitions labor and sexual exploitation\n• Social conditions that facilitate the exploitation of persons\n• Steps to address these conditions\n• Guidance on how to build a collective action campaign within your community that focuses on the solution \nAttendees will leave with a written plan to implement their campaign. Four weeks following the workshop\, the group will reconvene virtually to discuss their progress and advice on how to proceed going forward. Attendees are asked to be prepared to stay for the entire workshop. \nA minimum of 2-3 people from each student group\, resident hall\, degree cohort\, faculty department and college must attend together.
