SUMMARY:Brentano String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \nSince its inception in 1992\, the Brentano String Quartet – Mark Steinberg\, violin\, Serena Canin\, violin\, Misha Amory\, viola\, and Nina Maria Lee\, cello – has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism\,” while the Los Angeles Times praises its playing as “brilliant” and “virtuosic.” Following many years as Artists in Residence at Princeton University\, since 2014 they have been Artists in Residence at Yale University. The Quartet also currently serves as the collaborative ensemble for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, and its recordings span music of several centuries\, from Mozart\, Haydn\, Beethoven and Schubert to Charles Wuorinen and Steven Mackey. \n\n\n	From the archive:

DESCRIPTION:Hungarian-born classical pianist and conductor Sir András Schiff has been honored with every major musical award during the course of his 45-year career – a Grammy Award\, a Gramophone Award\, a Golden Mozart Medal of the International Stiftung Mozarteum (of which there have been only four previous winners in 70 years) and the Wigmore Hall Medal just to name a few. Schiff is one of the most renowned living interpreters of Bach\, Mozart\, Beethoven\, Schubert and Schumann. His many recordings include much of the keyboard music of Bach; music of Domenico Scarlatti\, Ernst von Dohnányi\, Johannes Brahms\, and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; the complete piano sonatas of Mozart and Schubert; the complete piano concertos of Felix Mendelssohn with Charles Dutoit and of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (with the Camerata Academica Salzburg led by Sándor Végh); the complete Beethoven piano concertos with the Staatskapelle Dresden led by Bernard Haitink; and the complete piano concertos of Béla Bartók with the Budapest Festival Orchestra led by Iván Fischer. \nSchiff’s Spivey Hall program includes Mendelssohn’s Fantasy in F-sharp minor\, Op. 28; Beethoven’s Sonata in F-sharp major\, Op. 78; Brahms’s 8 Piano Pieces\, Op. 76 and 7 Fantasies\, Op. 116; and Bach’s English Suite No. 6 in D minor\, BWV 811. \nTickets are priced at $75 (with discounts for subscribers\, groups\, students and Georgia educators)\, and are available for purchase now. \nA dinner prior to the performance is available for an additional fee of $40 per person. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Zeller is Clayton State University’s director of opera and vocal studies; he has performed throughout the United States\, Spain\, and Austria\, and has appeared on German television\, winning acclaim for his memorable characterizations as a singing actor. Dr. Otaki is CSU’s director of keyboard studies\, and has performed and recorded with such renowned international ensembles as the Graffe String Quartet\, Kodaly Quartet\, Swiss Wind Quintet\, Jose White Quartet\, and Martinu Quartet\, as well as English violist Roger Chase.  Together\, the two artists will perform a program of classical music\, including selections from Ludwig van Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte\, Op.98\, and traditional American compositions by Stephen Foster\, including “Beautiful Dreamer” and “Gentle Annie.” Otaki will play on Spivey’s Hamburg Steinway Model D-274 concert grand piano\, named “Clara” after composer Clara Wieck Schumann\, so it is fitting that the recital program will also include several pieces by Schumann\, including “Loreley\,” and “Warum willst du and’re fragen.” \nAdmission to this Division of Music performance is free\, with no tickets required. \n\n\n	From the archive:

DESCRIPTION:Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall (www.spiveyhall.org)\,  the Southeast’s premier recital hall renowned internationally for its superior acoustics and the excellence of its classical\, jazz and world music artists\, will host the 38th Annual Atlanta Area Suzuki Piano Association Graduate Recital. The concert\, scheduled forSunday\, January 17\, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.\, will feature performances by students of the AASPA graduate program\, followed by a special appearance by pianist Robert Henry\, Kennesaw State University artist-in-residence and assistant director of the Atlanta Boy Choir. \nTwenty students from the AASPA graduate program\, ages 7 to 15\, will participate in the recital. After a brief intermission\, Henry will take the stage to perform the first movement of Carl Vine’s Sonata No. 1\, followed by two virtuosic pieces by Frédéric Chopin: the Etude\, Op. 25 No. 1\, “Aeolian Harp\,” and Ballade No.1 in A-flat major\, Op. 47 No. 3.\nThe program will close with an awards presentation.
