SUMMARY:Black History Month 2023 - The Power of Storytelling (Virtual Book Discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Every February\, Black History Month recognizes the accomplishments\, contributions\, and legacy of African Americans in U.S. history and society\, from activists and civil rights pioneers to leaders in business\, politics\, academia\, culture\, and more. \nThe Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta regularly engages in the Black History Month celebrations to honor the importance of African Americans in shaping the American nation. This year\, we want to highlight the transformative power of storytelling and its potential to raise awareness and bring about change for a social cause. Throughout human history\, stories and narratives have been an essential way of connecting with an audience and appealing to hearts and minds. They enable us to understand a different experience of the world\, and thus enhance our empathy. In the struggle for social justice and equality\, storytelling was\, and still is\, of particular importance to the history of Black people. \nIn this context\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta organizes a virtual book discussion on the book “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel” on February 23\, 2023\, 1pm-2pm EST. \nIn collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta will virtually host Fork Burke (Editor) and Myriam Diarra (Editor) who\, in conversation with Dr. Stephane Dunn\, will discuss their latest publication “I will be different every time: Black Women in Biel”. They will provide an insider look into their book which explores the historical and contemporary lived experiences of Black women from the town of Biel/Bienne [Switzerland]. In addition to shedding light on this extraordinary part of the global Black diaspora\, Fork Burke and Myriam Diarra will speak on the importance of storytelling and share ideas on the legacy writing process that preserves the histories of the Black diaspora for future generations. \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Adam Brookes\, Author of Fragile Cargo
DESCRIPTION:“Wars not only put individual lives at risk\, but entire cultures. From Ukraine to Iraq to Afghanistan\, we’ve grown used to seeing images of looted museums\, obliterated landmarks\, and broken artifacts. The theft of important works of art in Western Europe by the Nazis during World War II has been widely documented. Less well-known—and told here for the first time in English—is the astounding true story of the efforts in China to protect one of the greatest art collections in the world from almost certain destruction.” \nIn Fragile Cargo: The World War II Race to Save the Treasures of the Forbidden City\, journalist Adam Brookes gives readers the gripping true story of the bold and determined museum curators who saved the priceless treasures of China’s Forbidden City in the years leading up to World War II and beyond. \nAbout the Author\nAdam Brookes was born in Canada and grew up in the United Kingdom. For many years he was a journalist for BBC News\, working as a correspondent in Beijing\, as well as in Indonesia and the United States. He lives in Takoma Park\, Maryland. \n\n\n	From the archive:

DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University CIBER for their International Business Webinar Series\, “Changing Dynamics of International Competition in Fashion Entrepreneurship: Sustainability as a Game-Changer”.\n\nRecently\, the nature of entrepreneurial activity has gone through tremendous change with entrepreneurs designing business models challenging even the strongest global players\, and responding to urgent calls such as sustainability. Fashion industry have showcased numerous striking examples of how new ventures change the rules of the game in a well-established industrial domain. This has been traced in the rise of several international brands founded by fashion entrepreneurs (i.e.\, ACBC Shoes\, Reformation\, Everlane\, Patagonia)\, in the increasing number of collaborations between incumbent firms\, new ventures and NGOs (i.e.\, ACBC shoes collaborating with luxury brands like Missoni and Chloe\, Gucci collaborating with Wordrise and Artolution\, Adidas collaborating with Parley for the Oceans)\, as well as in criticisms towards the current business models of established global brands (i.e.\, fast fashion companies like Zara).\n\nWith the purpose of providing insight both from the academic domain and practice\, this webinar will present a discussion to highlight following questions:\n\n-How does a strong orientation towards sustainability transform the playground of big multinationals in the fashion industry? What kind of opportunities have emerged for international new ventures?\nHow do digital technologies change the nature of fashion entrepreneurship and affect the achievement of sustainability-oriented goals? Is technology a part of the problem\, or is it the solution?\nIn the face of these changes\, what are the high priorities on the agenda of practitioners? What are the striking research questions for academics?\n\n\nKey take-aways:\n\nHearing about the personal experience of a fashion entrepreneur with international coverage.\nGaining a viewpoint on various business model implications of sustainability orientation with a special focus on how entrepreneurs change the face of international competition in the fashion industry.\nLearning about new research questions and strategies\n\n\n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series "Revisiting Export Strategy: Research and Practice"
DESCRIPTION:Exporting is arguably the most consequential international business (IB) and international\nmarketing (IM) activity undertaken by firms. It is also the backbone of IB initiatives\, with\nMNCs and other large international firms being among the largest exporters. Recently\, the\nanti-globalization theme has regained momentum\, especially following the COVID-19\npandemic\, the war in Ukraine\, and subsequent supply chain bottlenecks. These disruptions\nhave demonstrated the importance of exporting and importing not only for finished goods but\nalso commodities. Paradoxically\, as compared to the past\, far less research on exporting topics\nis published in academic journals lately. Research activity on exporting as an alternative to\nmore involved forms of IB/IM engagement does not appear to have gained much momentum\namong scholars. \nThe goal in this webinar is to present exporting’s role in IB/IM research and practice. They will\nalso discuss how exporting strategy can respond to fundamental shifts in globalization\n(e.g.\, digitalization\, anti-globalization\, strong dollar)\, and disruptive changes in global climate\n(e.g.\, politics\, economic\, the pandemic). The webinar will highlight country and company\nillustrations and will provide various lenses through which scholars and practitioners might\napproach exporting. The target audiences include academics\, researchers\, and practitioners \nKey Takeaways:\n– The ubiquity and importance of exporting within IM/IB\n– Responding to fundamental global shifts and disruptive forces through exporting\n– Issues and topics for future export research consideration (areas\, conceptualizations\, and\nmethods) \n\n\n	From the archive:

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Oceania
DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University CIBER for International Business Webinar Series “Oceania: International Business\, geopolitics and engaging with the ocean of our future” \n  \nDescription:  \nThe Pacific Ocean is our planet’s single biggest feature. If western civilization was shaped by the Mediterranean Sea\, and industrialization and hyper-globalization were marked by the Atlantic Ocean\, it is clear that an important part of our future will play out in the Pacific\, in environmental\, security and economic terms. With the Indo-Pacific becoming a new epicenter of world affairs\, a new kind of 21st century “Great Game” is taking place among global superpowers in the South Pacific. Home to fewer than 13 million inhabitants\, yet covering 15% of the world’s surface\, the South Pacific Island nations have been\, for a long time\, seen as “simply a bunch of small remote islands”\, marred by the triple tyranny of colonial history\, remoteness and size. Capturing human imagination and sparking geopolitical discourse for centuries\, going back to James Harrington’s utopian commonwealth of Oceana (1656)\, the South Pacific remains one of the “neglected locations” within the international business discipline\, despite its growing security\, economic and environmental relevance. \n  \nModerator\nMatt Raskovic\nAuckland University of Technology\, New Zealand and Vice-President Marketing at the Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy (ANZIBA)\n\nPanelists\nProfessor Damon Salesa\nVice-Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology\, New Zealand and an expert on the South Pacific\n\nProfessor Arun Elias\nDean of the College of Business\, Hospitality and Tourism Management\, Fiji National University\, Fiji\n\nProfessor Elizabeth L. SUMMARY:Aprio Webinar: CHIPS & Inflation Reduction Acts: Understanding the Tax Implications & Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Two major pieces of legislation\, the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act and the Inflation Reduction Act\, are once again changing the tax landscape. \nJoin Aprio for a webinar to learn what the CHIPS and Inflation Reduction Acts could mean for you and your business going forward. Our Tax Services team will discuss how: \n– The Inflation Reduction Act focuses on climate and healthcare\, with incentives covering activities like the development of clean energy\, energy-efficient improvements to commercial buildings\, consumer adoption of energy-efficient technologies and caps for Medicare drug costs. Incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act are funded from the much-discussed Global Minimum tax which applies to companies with $1 billion in annual earnings\, and increased funding for the IRS. \n– The CHIPS Act offers a variety of incentives to spur domestic capabilities to manufacture semiconductors.
