Jimmy Carter Joins ‘The Elders’ in Istanbul to Tackle Climate Change

Former President Jimmy Carter was in Istanbul, Turkey, Oct. 31, to join “The Elders,” a group of global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela, to issue a statement underscoring their concern about climate change prior to negotiations on the issue coming up in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The group, which is chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, included Gro Harlem Brudtland, former prime minister of Norway and the U.N.’s secretary-general’s special envoy on climate change; Martti Ahtisaari, former president of Finland; Ela R. Bhatt, founder of India’s Self-Employed Women’s Association; Mary Robinson, former Irish president; Kofi Annan, former U.N.secretary general; Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former president of Brazil and Graca Machel, international activist on women’s and children’s rights.

The Elders brought 13 of their grandchildren to join them to emphasize the urgency of the issue for future generations. Mr. Carter’s grandsons, Hugo Wentzel, 10, and Jeremy Carter, 22, were among the participants.

According to www.theelders.org, the group urged the heads of government that are to attend to Copenhagen meeting in December to agree to a two degree Celsius target as the outer limit of global temperature increase that humankind can tolerate.

The Web site also indicated that they agreed that global greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by at least 50 percent by 2050 to stop further global warming.

In addition, they called on the representatives of the G8 and other industrialized countries to accept their historic responsibility for the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, and to commit to emissions cuts of 25-40 percent by 2020, and at least 80 percent by 2050, relative to levels in 1990, backed by verifiable national action plans.

The site said that they also agreed that the big emerging economies reduce their emissions through national action plans that are measurable and verifiable and that they agreed that industrialized countries are to provide the majority of financial support of at least 100 billion euros a year to help developing countries to shift to low carbon prosperity and adapt to the damaging effects of climate change that are already tackling climate change.

Jimmie Carter is again participating in subjects he does not understand. The entire Global Climate Change is based on un-audited data used by the HOAXTER AL GORE. His data was never validated by the Scientific Community using their well known and accepted "peer Review". When Scientists requested the base data, Al Gore' quasi scientists said that the data no longer exists. No one should take this Climate Change theory seriously unless they also believe that Storks deliver babies.

Jerry K. does not have to go to Al Gore for validation of global warming, look it up OR just keep sticking your head in the sand.

Global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions is easily debunked using the laws of Physics,(specifically Boyles Law and Charles Law). If our atmosphere was subjected to large amount of CO2 emissions, we would HAVE to see a resultant decline in the Nitrogen and Oxygen content as well. O2 content of our atmosphere was and IS 20.8% - Nitrogen Content- STILL 79%(as it has always been in our lifetimes)because you CANNOT have more than 100% of the total of all the partial pressures of gases in a mixed gas environment, increased Co2 out put would HAVE to show a resultant decrease in N2 and O2 - Which has not happened. WHERE IS ALL THE MISSING CO2?

allow me to explain: "the total pressure of any mixed gas cannot exceed the sum of the partial pressures of its component gases" Atmospheric Pressure at sea level: 14.7psi component gases of our atmosphere: 79% N2 20.8% O2 .2% everything else, i.e. Argon, Co2, He, evrything... Any increase in a component gas will cause a decrease in the other component gases...for example, if you increase the Co amount by even ONE PERCENT, O2 and N2 content (by percentage) MUST decrease. IT HASN'T! O2 and N2 composition of our atmosphere remains at 20.8 and 79 percent (respectively) WHERE IS THE CO2? It must be like a "miracle gas"!

John, you use absolutely no facts to back up yourself or anythng else. You have less credibility than Gore and Carter, so you have absolutely none. Pull your head out of your backside. Over 30,000 scientists last year, with over 12,000 with doctorates signed a report out of an Oregon university that said that humans have zero effect on climate and there is no such thing as global warming. It all has to do with the sun, solar flares, solar cycles and eath cycles. Get educated, this engineer/scientist is not bying your or Al Gores lies.
