Members Forum: Sports Activism on the Global Podium

1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Dr. John Carlos and Tommie Smith captured the spirit of the civil rights movement and athlete activism when they raised black-gloved fists in support of human rights.
Fast forward fifty years. Taking a knee has replaced the raised fist. The sports field continues to present itself as a strong platform to promote civil and human rights awareness.
Dr. John Carlos and Mel Pender, both 1968 Olympic medalists, will share their thoughts on how sports serve as a voice for civil movements.
Mel Pender will sign his book “Expression of Hope: The Mel Pender Story” following the program. The book will be available for purchase for $20, cash only.
