Turkey-US Relations Amid Global Turmoil: Rules-Based Multilateralism or Flexible Alliance?

The Atlanta Council on International Relations, together with the Georgia State University CIBER and Global Atlanta is honored to host at the Capital City Club (downtown) January 13: Professor Fuat Keyman, “Turkey-US Relations Amid Global Turmoil: Rules-Based Multilateralism or Flexible Alliance?”
Turkey’s relations with the European Union have been problematical for many years. In more recent years, relations between the United States and Turkey also have become increasingly frayed. The American invasion of Iraq and its support for the granting of a Kurdish autonomous state in northern Iraq; American support for the mostly Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in its fight against the Islamic State in Syria; Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 surface-to-air (SAM) missile defense system and America’s subsequent refusal to honor sales of the F-35 fighter; and Increasing perceptions of authoritarian rule in Turkey has left an open question as to the where and the how of Turkey’s status with the United States and the West. What appear to be valid criticisms on both sides of the divide have left only one nation in a position to exploit the growing fracture and Putin is expected to increase his newfound advantage in the coming new year.
Come listen to a discussion on their potential impact of these and other issues of on-going relations between Turkey and the United States, multilateralism, and the NATO Alliance.
