Thomas Mann: DEMOCRACY WILL WIN!

November 2, 2022 at 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Thomas Mann: Democracy Will Win! is intended as a concrete contribution to current debate on both sides of the Atlantic.

Thomas Mann, German writer and Nobel laureate, immigrated to California, and used the radio medium to spread thoughts on democracy to the German people during Nazi rule. In 1943, he addressed the Library of Congress with his famous speech: โ€œIt is a terrible spectacle when the irrational becomes popular.โ€

The first part of the exhibit presents Thomas Mannโ€™s political biography. The second, multimedia part of the exhibit connects this history to the present.ย What makes a political person?ย How does one become a supporter of democracy?ย How does one defend oneโ€™s stance?
