Approximately 500 yards from one impressive work of art, the Cyclorama, another takes shape. David Landis, a local Atlanta sculptor has spent the last four months in his workshop located not far from Grant Park molding life into a Phoenix, the mythical bird which rises from it’s own ashes.
When it is finished it’s wing span will be over 14 feet and it will rise up over fifteen feet when seated on it’s nine foot pedestal This symbol of “rebirth” is a gift to the city of Toulouse, France from it’s sister city, Atlanta, GA. It is given in friendship and out of compassion for those injured or killed in an explosion in the city of Toulouse, which took place September 21, 2001. When “The Phoenix” is dedicated in the Jardin de Caffarelli in Toulouse France sometime in late May of 2005 it may remind some Atlantans of a similar gesture may to Atlanta by France. The magnificent Rodin sculpture, “Out of the Gates of Hell” which graces the lawn of the Woodruff Arts Center was given to the city of Atlanta when tragedy struck the community of Atlanta. It was a gift from the country of France in memory of those Atlantans killed in a plane crash in Orly, France in 1962. The members of the Toulouse Sister City Alliance who have formed the non-profit organization, A Phoenix for Toulouse, Inc. have been working since 2002 to realize their dream of “A Phoenix for Toulouse”. They will hold their third annual “Wonderful World of Wine” benefit on September 10th at the Westin Buckhead Hotel Atlanta. A quelques centaines de mètres de la célèbre oeuvre d’art du Cyclorama, dans son atelier d’artiste à Grant Park (Atlanta), le sculpteur David Landis travaille depuis 4 mois à la réalisation d’un Phoénix, l’oiseau fabuleux de la mythologie qui se brûle lui-même sur un bûcher pour renaître de ses cendres.
D’une envergure supérieure à 4,3 mètres et d’une hauteur de 5 mètres, ce symbole de ” renaissance ” est destiné à la ville de Toulouse avec laquelle est jumelée Atlanta. Superbe témoignage d’amitié des Atlantais à l’égard de ceux qui ont souffert lors de l’explosion de l’usine AZF le 21 septembre 2001, le Phénix sera inauguré dans le Jardin de Compans-Caffarelli à Toulouse fin mai 2005.
Ce témoignage d’amitié peut en rappeller un autre à certains, celui fait par la France à la Ville d’Atlanta en 1962. Cette année là, la magnifique sculpture de Rodin sur la pelouse du Woodruff Arts Center intitulée, « La Porte de l’Enfer » était donnée à notre ville à cause de la tragédie qui a laissé pour morts un nombre important d’Atlantais lors d’un accident au décollage à Orly (Paris).
Les membres du Comité de jumelage Atlanta – Toulouse ont créé une organisation charitable, A Phoenix for Toulouse, Inc. afin de lever des fonds en faveur de ce projet. Le troisième événement de bienfaisance le “Wonderful World of Wine” aura lieu le 10 septembre au Westin Buckhead Hotel Atlanta.
