Philip Wainwright

Emory University has named a new vice provost for international affairs who has also taken the helm of the Halle Institute for Global Learning

The institute, endowed by the late Coca-Cola Co. executive Claus Halle, hosts frequent lectures by inbound diplomats, academics and business leaders.

Philip Wainwright, currently associate dean for international and summer programs at Emory College of Arts and Sciences, took up both posts March 1 after edging out two other internal candidates.

He replaces Holli Semetko, who stepped down last August to return to teaching and research. She is now a chaired professor of media and international affairs.

Dr. Semetko launched a variety of new initiatives during her tenure, including a visiting scholars program between Emory and Nanjing University, as well as the Halle Institute’s annual India Summit and Turkish lecture series.

Dr. Wainwright has seen the value of study abroad in his current position, he said in a news release.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to coordinate and promote internationalization more broadly, and to help lead Emory’s effort to refine its global strategy and its identity as an international university,” he said.
