Join the Links Incorporated for the film screening of “Maestrina Da Favela”, directed by Falani Spivey, intimately films the coming-of-age of Brazilian percussionist, Elisete “Elem” De Jesus and her mission to liberate children from a life of drugs and violence in her favela community. Filmed in Brazil’s capital of African culture, Salvador, Bahia the documentary explores the culture of Afro-Brazilians living in the rocinha favela, located in the Pelourinho historic center, which was once the largest slave market in the New World. The Pelo as it is affectionally is called, resonates with the spirits, culture and music of Africa.
