Promesas de Papel/ Paper Promises: A Conversation with Artist Maria Cristina Tavera

October 15, 2020 at 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art presents a virtual conversation with Maria Cristina Tavera, a Latinx artist, independent curator, and activist influenced by her transnational upbringing. Her exhibit, “Promesas de Papel/Paper Promises,” will be featured in the upcoming virtual OUMA exhibition set to premiere on October 30th. Tavera’s work explores race, ethnicity, gender, migration, and cultural amalgamation through iconography found in Latin American legends, commercial packaging, media, politics, comics, maps, currency, graffiti, and games. The upcoming exhibit will feature several of her newest pieces created in the wake of national protests.

Javier Díaz de León, the Consul General of Mexico to Atlanta, and Nicholas Ladany, Ph.D., President of Oglethorpe University, will provide opening remarks. This conversation will be moderated by two OU students: Rebecca Castro ’22 and Claudia Fernanda Martinez ’22 and hosted by Elizabeth Peterson, OUMA Director.

This event is hosted by the OU Museum of Art and the OU Diversity Equity and Inclusion Taskforce and presented in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
