The International Criminal Court and the Fight Against Atrocity Crimes

November 19, 2015 at 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Center for Civil and Human Rights, in partnership with the Consulate of Liechtenstein, will host the United Nations representative from Liechtenstein, Ambassador Christian Wenaweser as an honored speaker. Ambassador Wenaweser will speak about the history, challenges, and struggles for prioritizing peace through the International Criminal Court.

Genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes are considered the most serious offenses under international law โ€“ and yet, efforts to hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable have proven often unsuccessful for the last few decades.

The ICC aims to fill the existing impunity gap, not only by putting perpetrators on trial, but also by giving an incentive to States to investigate and prosecute, however, challenges remain. Almost 70 States have not yet joined the Court, arrest warrants are difficult to enforce, especially when issued against high level politicians, and States struggle with the question of prioritizing peace or justice.

A Q&A Session and Wolfgang Puck catered onsite reception will follow the Ambassador’s presentation.
