The conversation comes at a critical moment: following the Libyan civil war and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, a wave of fighters and weapons flooded the Sahel region, leaving Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to contend with heavily armed extremist groups. Frustrations over security partnerships with NATO member states eventually contributed to a series of military coups, and all three countries withdrew from those alliances. Now, with reports emerging that the Alliance of Sahel States is exploring renewed ties with the United States, this panel examines what that path forward could look like.
