The University Singers, Georgia State University’s premiere vocal ensemble, has been selected to represent the United States at the 2013 Florilège Vocal de Tours, an international choral song competition, in Tours, France, May 24-26.
The choir is comprised of music majors and non-majors, undergraduate and graduate students who have been selected through competitive auditions.
The GSU School of Music Singers’ tours have taken them throughout much of the United States, including Carnegie Hall on two occasions and six international tours with stops in France, Belgium, Italy, Yugoslavia, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Canada and Great Britain.
“The competition in Tours provides Georgia State University and the School of Music an opportunity to be showcased on the international stage,” said Deanna Joseph, director of choral studies at Georgia State and conductor of the University Singers, in a news release.
“Due to the high level of competition involved, just being selected to compete is in and of itself something of an award.”
The choir is to depart Atlanta on May 20 for Paris, where they will perform a concert at the American Cathedral and then travel to Tours for the competition. Following their stay in Tours, they will perform in Toulouse, Atlanta’s sister city, in a concert in the Basilique Notre-Dame la Daurade before returning to Atlanta on May 29.
The choir is to present a free concert on Friday, May 17, at 8 p.m., in the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall on campus featuring works by Lauridsen, Debussy, Distler and Hogan.
