Mary Waters, deputy commissioner for international trade in Georgia, has been elected as president of the State International Development Organizations, or SIDO, a two-year term ending in 2023.
The national membership organization brings together state trade and investment programs and agencies, hosting two yearly conferences and offering members a chance to build linkages and share best practices for growing trade at the state level.
Ms. Waters leads the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s efforts to boost exports by companies based in the state.
Georgia, a top-10 exporting state, is consistently seen as a forward-thinking jurisdiction when it comes to strategies for international trade growth, boasting state-run trade and investment offices in 12 markets worldwide, some of which conduct market research and make introductions for companies.
The state is currently administering the Go Global Georgia program, which provides reimbursable grants of up to $6,000 for as much as 50 percent of the cost of pre-approved export development activities. Learn more and apply here
Before becoming deputy commissioner, Ms. Waters was senior international trade manager within the division, managing medical and biotech exports and helping small and medium-sized companies with export readiness and market development. Previously she served as an international account manager at Norcross-based Guided Therapeutics Inc.
A native Oregonian, Mary holds a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida and a dual Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and International Studies from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She speaks Portuguese and fluent Spanish.
