The Georgia Institute of Technology is the first university to install a “big data” 5D Lab for developing new standards for the construction industry’s use of smart analytics, according to a Jan. 23 news release from Stuttgart, Germany-based RIB Software AG.

According to the release, RIB’s partnership with Georgia Tech will enhance the research capability of the university in applying iTW0 big data 5D technology.

It also is to enable Georgia Tech students to have access to state-of-the art software for managing complex construction projects.

A Georgia Teach release said that the College of Architecture will incorporate the software in its curriculum. Also, Georgia Tech Facilities and Capital Planning and Space Management units will use the software to evaluate costs and schedules for project design alternatives.

Additionally, Georgia Tech will specifically use the software for its high performance computing (HPC) project to evaluate costs and schedule design alternatives.

The proposed complex to house the HPC project is to be in Technology Square, between Spring and West Peachtree Streets, near Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business and the Georgia Tech Hotel in Midtown.

According to Georgia Tech’s Executive Director for Real Estate Development John Majeroni, Georgia Tech will select a private developer to take responsibility for the projet through a normal selection process.

“The development approach is new for Georgia Tech,” Mr. Majeroni said. “The institute will leverage its role as the anchor tenant to encourage the developer to bring additional space and users to the prject, magnifying its positive impact on the Technology Square neighborhood.”

Thomas Wolf, RIB’s CEO, said that the partnership will enable Georgia Tech to define new standards “to learn and study how to better plan, execute and manage construction projects.”

From its 30 offices worldwide, according to RIB, it is serving 100,000 clients including construction contractors, subcontracts, developers, owners, investors and governments.
