An economic development official for the new German state of Saxony told GlobalFax that Atlanta-based Southern Co. would “make the mistake of a lifetime” if it did not invest in the state’s energy sector that the government is working to expand into Middle Europe.

Saxony wants to bring more competition into its electricity industry and establish a presence in other countries, including Poland and Czech Republic, that are likely to soon join the European Union, said Kajo Schommer, the state minister for economic affairs for Saxony.

“We told Southern that they have a big chance to cooperate with the Saxony government to develop this new industry,” said Dr. Schommer at a reception at the home of Heinrich-Peter Rothmann, consul general of Germany for Atlanta, on July 25.
