Loucas Tsilas and Andros Nicolaides, the Greek and Cypriot ambassadors to the U.S., respectively, will attend the 75th anniversary of the founding of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) to be held in Atlanta Aug. 10-14 at the Hyatt Regency hotel downtown.
U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., Ouriana Arvanitis, political counselor at the Greek embassy in Washington, D.C., John Brademas, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and president emeritus of New York University and Archbishop Spyridon, primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of North America, also are scheduled to attend.
AHEPA was founded in Atlanta and has grown into an international organization with more than 50,000 members and chapters around the world.
More than a 1,000 attendees, including a special delegation from Australia, are expected at the event which will feature the Hellenic Expo, an exposition of Greek and Greek-American products, services, art, software, literature and music.
A variety of seminars will be held including a review of the history of the Olympic Games, self-help programs on estate planning and international business topics. A number of social and sporting events also are scheduled.
California real estate developer Alex Spanos, owner of the San Diego Chargers, and Mary Leskowitz, who chairs the Greek and Latin departments at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Ma., will receive achievement awards.
