Surya Inc., a manufacturer of area rugs and home accessories, is to invest $30 million into its corporate office and distribution facility in Cartersville, Gov. Nathan Deal announced on June 5.
The governor’s announcement followed a board meeting in Cartersville where its plans were finalized to open a state-of-the-art, 1 million-square-foot facility that is to house the company’s supply chain management, sales, web and creative development services.
Satya Tiwari, Surya’s president, was out of the country for the announcement but in a press release said that the expansion would enable the company to consolidate its product offerings under one roof to serve its designer and retail customers.
The company is to create 200 new jobs in addition to its current 250 in the course of the next few years. It is known in the industry for having exceptionally fast fulfillment rates.
Surya began making hand-knotted rugs and soft goods during the mid-1970s in the village of Ugapur in the northeast of India.
Following a chance meeting in Mumbai with representatives of the Federated Group, now Macy’s, Mr. Tiwari’s father, the former president, arranged for the company to start exporting to the U.S. The company opened a U.S. subsidiary in the New York/New Jersey area in 1986 and moved to Calhoun in 1998.
With the expansion, the Calhoun operations are to be transferred to Cartersville.
Surya now services more than 6,000 retail, design and e-commerce customers and offers more than 30,000 products across a range of categories – including rugs, pillows, throws, wall decor, accent furniture, lighting, decorative accents and a recently launched bedding lines.
It also provides innovative display, merchandising and training tools to support retailers in successfully promoting and selling home accessories.
Mr. Surya has been named a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entreprener of the Year 2014 Award in the Southeast region. Under his leadership, Surya has grown from $2.7 million in sales in 2004 to more than $80 million last year.
Award recipients will be announced at a special gala on Thursday, June 26 at the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel in Atlanta. Regional winners go on to compete at the national level.
