Israeli Consul General Opher Aviran will have a full suitcase when he leaves Atlanta at the end of July.
In what amounts to an exit interview with the Atlanta Jewish Times, the country’s top diplomat for the Southeast points to a haul of memorabilia and accolades — from a Nick Saban-signed football to a Hillels of Georgia award named in his honor — as evidence of the strong ties between his country and the region.
While it’s “bittersweet” to leave what he called his favorite posting in a 31-year diplomatic career, he told the newspaper he takes comfort in his achievements since August 2010, including building stronger ties with the black community and getting states to target Iran with divestment laws.
And it’s not as if he won’t be back: Mr. Aviran and his wife, Talyah, have built up five years worth of contacts here, including a close friendship with Gov. Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal. Plus, Mr. Aviran’s middle daughter Adi is staying in Georgia to pursue an acting career, using the arts degree she earned at Columbus State University.
