Ambassador Varnai Shorer, Israel‘s incoming consul general in Atlanta, officially started her term on Friday, July 24, replacing Opher Aviran after his five years of service here.
“The culture, diversity and warmth of this region of the U.S. is well-known, and I’m looking forward to learning more about each state, their communities and officials,” she said in a release.
The consulate general’s jurisdiction includes the following states besides Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Mrs. Shorer is a nearly 40-year veteran of the Israeli diplomatic corps, having served as a former ambassador to both Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as a former minister of congressional affairs at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
She most recently served as desk director at the Center for Policy Research and has substantial experience in the U.S. and the Middle East. She speaks Hebrew, French, English and Hungarian and was born in Beer Sheva, Israel.
Mrs. Shorer is joined by her husband, Oded, and daughter, Rony.
