Atlanta-based Novelis Inc. has been chosen as a supplier of light-weight aluminum sheets for the new Audi A8 luxury sedan.

The aluminum, manufactured with the company’s patented technology called Fusion, will allow the German automaker to “achieve weight savings not previously possible in automotive structural components,” Novelis said in a news release.

The aluminum sheet will be used in key parts of the new Audi including the hood, doors and roof. The value of the contract was specified in the news release.

Atlanta has been home to Novelis’ global headquarters since the company was formed in 2005 as a spin-off of Canadian aluminum maker Alcan Inc. Hindalco Industries Ltd., one of Asia‘s largest producers of aluminum and a leading copper producer, bought Novelis in 2007.

Hindalco is a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai, India.  Novelis has 12,000 employees and operates in 11 countries. The company serves large customers like Coca-Cola Co., Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp.

Earlier this year, Novelis announced it is moving its North American headquarters to Atlanta from Cleveland, creating at least 80 new corporate jobs.
